The violence against American citizens, as well as against those whose only crime is being an undocumented human being in the United States, is absolutely not normal.

Here’s a woman who told ICE agents she was disabled, and only trying to drive to a doctor appointment. No, this was not at all normal under Biden, under Obama, under Bush, under Clinton, nope, not in the least normal before our first, and hopefully only, fascist president.

There’s that, but Nixon stepped down, rather than postpone the inevitable. Nixon was highly intelligent as well. Just a couple differences. But, that doesn’t really speak to the culture war at that time. Hippies vs. Rednecks.

I lived through all that, and it pales in comparison. And it’s not recency bias. But yeah, it was hippies vs. rednecks in Nixon’s time. It’s possible future histories, able to see a broader perspective, will weave the two eras together, as part of the great Left/Right rift that has run throughout modern Western history. And the culture war then was not completely unrelated to today’s culture wars.

I say the Vietnam era pales, but the anti-war movement had an impact, and demonstrations in D.C. itself were much bigger. Students for a Democratic Society(SDS) were willing to be violent. Those were tumultuous times. So maybe it is recency bias to a degree.

I think if I feel partisanship is far worse today, and that somehow the late 60’s/early 70’s pale compared to now, that it must be the internet and social media that has driven partisanship to near Civil War level. I think that must have really helped to ratchet up anger.

Anyway, I sidetracked. No love lost by Nixon over hippies like me!

Im actually watching a documentary about the vietnam war right now. Its 17 hours long and extremely well done. Interviews with 80 people from all different perspectives. And it goes really far into the politics of the war from south vietnam, north vietnam, the viet cong, and the US.

The part I just watched was about how Nixon was running for president and it was a few weeks before the election and it was a close race. There was to be a meeting between saigon (south vietnam), Hanoi (north vietnam/vietcong) and the US in paris france. It was all set up to take place.
Lyndon Johnson had the phones in the Saigon government bugged and came across a phone call from Nixon to the south vietnamese government where he told them not to attend the meeting because if peace were achieved then it would help his opponent in the upcoming election. So Nixon was ok with more killing as long as it helped him get elected. And sadly it worked because Lyndon Johnson couldn't tell anyone about Nixons treasonous scheme because he would have to let everyone know that he had the FBI listening in on south vietnamese phone calls. What a **** show.

My dad fought in vietnam and after watching this program I came to learn that early on in vietnam americans were not engaging in any combat. They were simply advising South Vietnamese soldiers and doing engineering projects and stuff. So I asked my mom when my dad arrived in vietman. She said in late 1966. Which was when some of the bloodiest and deadliest battles of the war occurred. He spoke a little bit about his time there but not much at all. Talked about how hard it was to sleep because of all the mortars and machine gun fire constantly going off all night. Said he was always wet (got jungle rot in his foot) and scared. That is about all I got from him about it.
When my mom texted me telling me he went in 66 and I responded that was a really bad time to be there she texted my back this: "Yes it was. We were really lucky to get him back. He cant see or hear anything about that war without completely flipping out-crying and shaking. It was an awful thing he had to go through"

Brought tears to my eyes to read that after watching this documentary. Horrifying stuff.

The US dropped more bombs in vietnam than all of WW2. Crazy stuff.

He couldn’t do it, and his friend died in surgery.

I’m sorry the war haunted your father like that. So many suffered PTSD, in every war, but Vietnam was the war that brought PTSD to the fore.

It sounds like you’re watching Ken Burns Vietnam War doc. It was 18 hours long, I see it’s still archived, I might watch it again. Don’t know if that’s the one, but it was the best Vietnam War documentary I’ve seen. I remember the Nixon secret contact thing, likely from that doc. Neither me nor my buddies were fond of Tricky Dick. I was talking to the friend I mentioned, about Burns Vietnam doc, and he told me the film that reminded him the most of his time there was Forrest Gump!

They got the 4 parties (US, Saigon, Hanoi , and Viet Cong) to the negotiation table in France. The table was square. Saigon required that the VC and Hanoi reps sit at the same side of the table. VC and Hanoi wanted to sit at their own, separate sides of the table. The dispute lasted 10 weeks. The Soviet union finally came up with the brilliant idea (sarcasm) to use a round table and peace talks were finally able to begin.

****ing idiots. Couldn't figure out seating so the killing had to just continue for 10 weeks.

I believe it was 12 months, in 12 months more bombs were dropped on North Vietnam than dropped by the US in the entire Second World War.

Nixon's efforts to sabotage the peace were almost certainly treasonous, LBJ should have had the balls to go public with it. It would have been the end of Nixon

My knock on the Ken Burns doco was that it omitted the commitment to the war made by American allies, 5000 South Koreans died in Vietnam, nearly 600 ANZACS dies in Vietnam, Burns should have mentioned them, especially for the American audience.

John Pilger's writing on Vietnam is incredible and very moving you should get yourself a hold of that, I recommend starting with Heroes.

In Jan., 1973, several months before Butterfield revealed the taping system, I had a dream. I’m in the Oval Office, having a conversation with Nixon. At one point, he suddenly turns into a portable tape recorder on the Resolute desk. I lean over and ask him what’s wrong, how is it that he’s a tape recorder? His aids rush in acting upset that I’ve seen the president as a tape recorder, and I’m hustled out of the office. I was keeping a nightly dream journal at the time, and I’ve always seen this dream as a premonition of sorts.
