NBA Playoff format changed

Can someone explain what the actual problem with the current format is? The best team wins and that's bad?

As a jazz fan it seems like for the next coupe seasons at least it gives us a much better chance of making the playoffs.

But I expect the team to make the playoffs, regardless.

I suggested it in another thread, but I think a good hybrid would be top 6 per conference play within the conference and then the bottom four playoff spots are open regardless of conference.

I think it needs to be simple enough a system to be workable... when it's too complicated casual fans get confused and give up trying to understand.

I think if you go back through the standings, you'd find the top 6 from each conference generally make it in no matter what. It's only the last two spots that might be affected.

It would definitely be a disadvantage to the 1st place teams in either the EC or WC (or both) who may have to travel cross-country for Rd 1 games, not to mention the extra expenses.

So #1 plays #6 while #7 plays #8? Doesn't sound fair to the top seed.

Only way this works is if they have a play-in round. You expand to 10 teams from each conference in the playoffs with seeds #7 vs. #10 and #8 vs. #9 playing a 3 game series. You could cross conferences if you like, or even have it imbalanced based on records. Games are played over 5 days at most (travel day in between each game).

Winners are seeded 7th and 8th for traditional rounds of playoffs.

The bottom 4 thing is wayyy to complicated to be workable, the NBA would never go through with it.


It's too arbitrary too. Like why bottom 4? Why not bottom 2? Or Bottom 6?

Yes!!! Ditch the ping-pong balls and have the lottery teams in a play-off for draft position! They'd all be trying to lose! It'd put an interesting spin on things!!!

(and no, I don't think I've ever flown on a chartered flight - but I think you're confusing it with a corporate or general aviation jet anyhow)
