Hayward is working on his Warcraft. . . if his wife'll let him, that is.
If he is able to consistently hit the shot when he is left wide open, uncontested, it'll be a hell of a lot higher than 40% in those situations. In which case, yeah, the other team is going to want to guard him. Which would immediately address all of our spacing concerns.
As others have alluded, if he can hit that shot consistently, that brings the other center out from under the basket and opens things up for other guys. It also makes Rudy's passing skills that much more effective.
Why does it bring the center out? If I'm the opposing center I would be overjoyed that Mr. Length has abandoned the paint.
Exactly! Right now when Gobert comes out to take the pass off from one of the guards, the opposing 5 does nothing. Now imagine if there's a threat he's going to pivot, take a dribble in an shoot. The center HAS to play up on him. And that creates a chance to hit a cutter in the lane. You're talking about the defensive end. On offense, having a mid-range shot brings the defending center out as not to allow Gobert to have a wide open shot. This unclogs the paint for Favors and cutting guards.
I was sort of with you till this post. Did you watch the games this year? Nobody, literally nobody guarded him out by the FT line this last year. If they have to step out even 3 extra feet because he hits some shot from there it opens up cutting lanes and drives from other players. He doesn't even have to be money from that range just being a threat forces a change in the defense. And he's tall enough and a good enough passer to hit those guys if they do.Why would they slack off? I'm not sure people are worried he's going to drive around to the hoop.

No I'm not talking about the defensive end. Gobert puts an insane amount of pressure on the rim. This means his guy can't help when our wings get by their guy. If they miss their open shot Gobert is there for the putback/tip in. That is dangerous. Rudy shooting mid range jumpers not so much. Defense is about sacrifices. You can't cover everything. If I'm the other coach at best I have the nearest player put a hand in Rudy's face but I make sure my rim protector stays low.

None of this is effected by Gobert developing a jump shot (as Siro said). It could be argued that having the defender farther from the basket when a shot goes up would increase Gobert's ability to get space at the rim for rebounds. The defender would have less of a head start on position for the rebound. Increasing the impact his speed and athleticism have on the rebounds at the rim. Gobert is not a guy that stands around waiting for rebounds to come to him, and a lot of the guys he goes up against are. If they don't already have position on him then he has a better chance of going to get them. At least theoretically. No I'm not talking about the defensive end. And at 7'1 with a 9'7 standing reach Gobert would not be blocked and usually unbothered in his shot. Especially if it is a 6'6 SG or PG. If he makes that with regularity then the rival coach must put a 4 or 5 on him.
It becomes a pick your poison. Allow Gobert to drop 10-15 foot Js all night and hope your other big can grab the rebound over Favors or allow expert cutters like Burks or versitile players like Hood and Hayward into the paint and at the rim.
Y'all do know that the shot from 10'-15' is one of the hardest/worst shots in on the court?

They are difficult because there is nearly no such thing as an open 10'-15' shot and they require a lot of touch and aren't as easy to shoot in rhythm.
What we want is Rudy to be taking 15'-18' jumpers. Those are easier to take in rhythm and provide more spacing.
