For the most part, NBA shoes have the same sized soles. There might be +/- a quarter inch. Most shoes give around 1.25'' of height. You will see some that are 1.5'' and some that are just 1''. Usually never higher or lower than that. With the Hawes measurement you could see it was a little ridiculous (2.25'' added), which is why they have barefoot measurements.

not so fast my friend. you are misinformed. i collect shoes. i'm much taller when i wear my lebron x compared to wearing my kobe's. go try on bron X and then try few month old kobe 4, 5, 6, or 8's. kobes don't give 1 1/4 inch lift. for my size, after break in period it's no more than 1/2 inch. 5/8 at most. i wear size 11 1/2 and sometimes 12. most kobes/KDs are very low to the ground. it's made that way. but you will see big dudes wear kobes all the time.
and shoe size matters. MJ was size 13. compared to bron's 16. wade's 15.5. but how about 6ft 10 bosh? he only wears 14.5. so let's say MJ wears kobe's and Bron decides to wear bron x. 6ft 5 barefoot MJ would be 6ft 5 1/2 with kobe's on, and 6ft 7 1/4 Bron would be 6ft 9 to 6ft 9 1/4 with his lebron x's on because size 16 lebron x would be almost 2 inches especially if it is brand new.
and look at shaq. he was measured at 7ft 1 barefoot. if he wears this
in his ridiculous size 23 shoe then shaq would be 7ft 3 1/2 ish. so it means he could possibly be listed at 7ft 4!
so basically any given night you may lose up to 1/2 inch of your height or gain 1/2 inch height. so it's very unreliable way to view player's height.

Like I said, the combine uses barefoot measurements so teams can know they aren't cheating by wearing big-soled shoes. Shoes that are actually worn for games are usually around 1.25 inches.
Why do they even both to measure with shoes on? Because you play basketball in shoes.

NBA is near WWE level when it comes to making their stars look bigger and taller. go ask charles barkley or even kobe. barkley had no idea why he was listed at 6ft 7 initially. kobe always knew he was 6ft 5, but somehow he was listed at 6ft 7 in his rookie season. he actually later found out he was 6ft 4 3/4. measured by his own wife. patrick ewing was 6ft 10, but was listed at 7ft. so was hakeem. ralph sampson was listed at 7ft 4! go google ralph sampson and yao ming.
7fters are glorified in NBA. 7ft this and 7ft that. when media describes kg, dirk, duncan, etc they all say they are 7fters. and these shooting guards - it looks 'sexier' when you use the height with shoe on and round them up. tim hardaway jr. is now a prototypical shooting guard because he is listed at 6ft 6, not 6ft 4. derrick rose looks better when he is listed at 6ft 3 instead of 6ft 2. i remember collins brother interview - they were forced to be listed at 7ft. both of them were 6ft 10 1/2.
listen to espn and bron is somewhere between 6ft 8 250lb up to 6ft 9 270lb. KD is anywhere from 6ft 10 to 7ft!
it's a joke if you ask me. if they are going to use height with shoe on then just do it. be consistent. i'm fine with it. but KD is barefoot 6ft 9 and his listed height is 6ft 9. kevin love is 6ft 7 3/4 but listed at 6ft 10. d wade was measured at 6ft 3 3/4. and his listed height is 6ft 4. jason maxiell was measured at 6ft 5 even. larry johnson too. both were listed at 6ft 7. did they really have 2 inch lift on their shoe?

only legit organization is NFL when it comes to players height/weight data. by your logic NFL players should also have listed height with cleats on. after all there many positions such as TE, WR, CB, etc uses their verticals all the time on sunday. and they don't jump barefoot either.
