He’d get a layup or two just because McGrady didn’t want to wrestle with him.

He’s a fine announcer... I think maybe announcers are like cable or cell phone companies... They get noticed for their annoyances rather than the things they do good. I enjoy Brent Barry, Ian Eagle, Hot Rod back in the day... but most I just tolerate and there are certain guys that are straight garbage (Reggie Miller is public enemy number one for me of the national guys). Then sometimes you have to go arch the Boston or Houston homers and the game is just better on mute.

I like the cell phone metaphor. But here's another one:
Craig is the drummer; Matt is the guitarist. As a guitarist, it's damn hard to sound good when your drummer can't keep a beat.

Between his commentating, fry sauce and his hair when he first started, he was pretty awful. I remember reading things online about him years ago about how big of a Jazz homer he was. The thing I like about Harpring, he's like Gordon Hayward's Jazz career and has improved every year he's called games - at least to me he has.

The Boler thread opened my eyes that I'm pretty easy going when it comes to announcers. Harpring may not be a big name or be all that interesting, but he's a likable guy and loves his job.

I like the what's a skillet guy too. Jazz are lucky to have him and have had him for this long too. Hot Rod and Boone are the best for me (even if Boone comes across as a ditsy gma.)

I feel the same way. Im pretty easy going when it comes to announcers as well. I would be pretty happy with just about anyone doing that job. I dont have time to sit down and watch the game from start to finish without distraction and hang on every word of the announcers. I got too much stuff going on and so i typically watch on dvr and fast forward a lot and even when im watching live im typically folding laundry, doing dishes, entertaining my daughter, throwing the ball for my dog, etc etc.
 
Harpring is fine, but I wish he was allowed to relax a little. Maybe follow Hotrod's lead and maintain an enjoyable buzz throughout the game!

Seriously though, I don't see what incentive Matt has to improve when he knows that he is just a place holder until Ingles retires.
 
He is a solid 6. He is pulled down by the guy he has to sit next to.

However, he would sky-rocket to an 11 if he once just turned, like maybe right after someone banged down another 3 or threw a skip pass through traffic, and just punched Boler right in the face, like hard, with blood spurting everywhere. Didn't say anything, just sucker-punched him like a bitch.

I don't mind him, but I'd prefer him to talk more about the technical side of basketball, how plays are run, etc.. I'd want him to 'educate' us a bit more. But that could be due to the Network not wanting to make basketball too confusing for casual fans. I dunno. I've seen other teams commentators breaking down plays more (can't remember the team though), and whenever they do that I really enjoyed them.

As it stands a solid 7 for me.
 
I give him a not so solid eight. I mostly watch with the sound down though so I’m basing my vote off facial expressions and post-game comments.
