Shaq

If he continues with >18 PER production to go along with that D and shooting 38% from three then he will see the floor more if Quin has any nuts at all at this stage.

Craziest part of it all is he would be doing that production on a minimum contract.

I’m mildly concerned we still play Niang over him because of the whole Shaq is a pg... Niang is a PF and we need of minutes. We don’t need a traditional PF and Shaq rebounds as well as Niang anyway. Just play wings with JC and Favs on the second unit.

I think he will get time. My guess is he was able to get some assurances. I’d like Oni to find minutes too... even if it’s like 6-7 minutes to get his feet wet. There will be injuries and opportunities to get real bench rotation minutes during the season. Give Mike the night off occasionally... same with Joe if he’s ever consider breaking the streak.

The other thing is people saying the offense is the problem... it’s only one component of the offense... shooting. If the outside shooting is passable then he’s a great defender and a solid offensive player.

If the outside shooting is good then he should be in the main lineup(s). He would be better than Royce and maybe even Joe at this point, and anyone that's been paying attention know that I do not underestimate their importance to this team.

I see no likely scenario where he jumps Royce. They are complementary pieces anyway.

I think this board needs a full reboot of opinions on Royce.

The addition of Favors and Shaq should hopefully suck up all backup 4 (Niang) minutes.

I saw Dan Clayton (I think?) post a spreadsheet a week or so ago on minutes and the specific times people would sub... maybe I need to tinker with something like that.

I mean, it's hard to look at the numbers and make a great case for Royce, the argument for him exists in the context of team dynamics (that which the team lacks, and what he critically provides). So it is simultaneously true that Royce is really important to this team and that Royce is not particularly special.

I don't know how to get my point across without sounding like an *******. Shaq has game-changing skills (all the more if his shot is legit) and Royce keeps the main lineups from falling apart.

Here it is: I'm not knocking Royce (or Joe).

Here we go:

Who's the excel genius that can create us a template for this so we can all play along?

Yeah, I’m just not seeing what you’re seeing. And I’d say that a lot of Royce’s apparent flaws are as likely to be flaws with the system.

Yeah, it's funny. Offense isn't a problem for him at all unless you're talking shooting, to where it's just questionable. I think he's suffering from the inverse of what Euros used to be stereotyped for. Euros were stereotyped for being good shooters, and assumed they were bad defenders (and other guys who aren't athletic like a Korver). Here you have a guy who's known for being a really good defender but not necessarily known for being a shooter so we just assume "ah yeah, he must suck on offense."
