Excerpts from a media interview with Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan following Utah's 109-100 preseason victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday evening at Memorial Coliseum.

Sloan on Kyrylo Fesenko:

He seems to be in much better shape, because he couldn't play 24 minutes a year ago.

On Al Jefferson:

He got screwed up a little bit on defense. A couple things we haven't helped him with. We got a little bit confused. But that's what we're doing: the exhibition season. Try to make those things better the next time we play. We'll talk about it tomorrow.

He's going to be fine. I'm not worried about him. We have two or three guys that haven't been here at all. It takes a while for guys to get comfortable.

On C.J. Miles:

That's what he's been able to do. He expects more out of himself. It was nice to see him kind of come out of it on his own. We're not a candy feeder. Get a can full of candy; after they eat it, they stick their hand out and want another handfull. You just hope that they keep working to get over what they have to do. He knew what he had to do. Not getting spend a lot of time talking to him about.

Perimeter defense:

They've got the [team] to do that. They've got guys that can shoot. They've got a post-up player. And when you have that, that always breaks down if you get too much help inside.

Bench:

Well, we had some guys out there that didn't have all that [much] experience. But I still tried hard to — I think I got everybody in the ballgame. ... I didn't get but 10 guys in the first game. I think that's unfair, because I work these guys real hard and they did a good job.

Unusually upbeat for Sloan.

And I think we have a new nick name for CJ... Candy.

Man, I haven't had a "can of candy" since . . . well never. That must mean this is not the 1930s. I guess candy doesn't come in cans anymore.

Haha is that sad that that's the first thing I thought of when I read the article too?

Anywho, yesterday was not Columbus day, but National Coming Out Day. I had a few friends on Facebook come out of the closet - but MORE importantly I think BIG FES came out on the court. This could be a good year if only Fes could play like that all year.. or close to it.
