Snow storms

But wait

I thought the world was getting warmer?

Then why is it cold as hell in Utah and the NE?

The faithful warmites take refuge in the contention that warmer overall temps is supposed to generate disruptions in normal weather patterns. The current strong H zones over Alaska and Wyoming with strong persistant L zones over Hudson Bay and US Plains has set up wind tunnel coming down from the polar regions and back over Utah clear to California. Huge masses of cold air over the North American land mass.

A truer, less ideological analysis will address the declining Gulf Stream and other formerly prevalent ocean currents which provide a very potent cross lattitude exchange of heat from the tropical/subtropical seas towards the polar regions with cold currents in some areas moving south into the tropic/subtropics. When the ocean currents wane, the atmosphere must make up the difference, and will do so. No absolute requirement for temp change to drive these phenomena. No compelling research over millions of years to prove a correlation.

aye cahrumba!!!!!

Still snowing lightly, doesn't seem as windy for now and I'll be heading out to shovel and snowblow soon. Looks to be about 2+ ft deep in spots. we've got a big corner lot, so I've sure got my work cut out for me.

Officially we're at 18" and counting.

-27 degrees yesterday morning here. Up to - 17 today with a -36 windchill. Wind chills are supposed to hit -45 to -55 later today. I decided shoveling my driveway could wait.

I hate winter.

I'm a winter guy who prefers it to be cold over hot any time. I have been working outside (not for long periods of time, but for like an hour or two) in nothing more than jeans and a hoodie lately. I was colder than **** outside working yesterday with a little more clothing than that on.

I'm with you on that 100%. Cold over hot any time. I do grow my own sweater though, that might have something to do with it.

well, nearly 3 hours of shoveling and snowblowing later, and you can hardly tell I did anything at all - plus they haven't plowed our street yet, I'm not sure we're ever going to get our cars out of the driveway...

but one side of our front porch steps is now a wonderful sledding hill, maybe I can find a couple of those plastic saucers in the garage and have some fun!

Here's what it looked like outside my apartment today (pardon the poor quality of my cameraphone pic):

It's still coming down hard, too. Everything here is pretty much shut down. People have been told to simply not go outside, whether in a car or just walking. My brother, who lives in Wauwatosa near Milwaukee, tells me that all the Milwaukee buses have shut down, which is a once-in-a-decade type deal. It's definitely pretty crazy out there.

54 degrees outside...sucks.

Edited to add: Thats outside the window from my hallway...

You can see the morning ice melting off of the roofs.

How's the weather in NYC? I'm heading out there tomorrow for a few days, and I'm hoping the subways are still running fine and no delays at JFK.

Yes, it is nice in Burbank, along Warner Blvd.

42 degrees this morning....brrrrr.

lordy JT, I think I'd rather have 2 feet of snow than that cold!

These two statements remind me of something a friend mentioned the other day, she'd heard on the radio that in Charleston, SC they keep the school kids inside for recess when the temperature is below 40 degrees, but in International Falls, MN, the kids go outside for recess as long as it's above -15 degrees.

I need to take some pictures of this epic snow. Last I heard this is the third highest snowfall in Chicago history.

That is absolutely ridiculous. The coldest I've ever felt was -14 with maybe another -5 or so tacked on due to wind chill. I can't even imagine ~-50.. that's insane.

People still think global warming is a hoax? Holy crap. When 99% of environmental scientists are warning us that it's the real deal, and the other 1% are funded/employed/bribed by the oil companies, and we're experiencing crazy weather across the map, I think we know who to believe.

99%? Making up statistics now?

I don't think people realize how big the Earth is versus the human population. Based on size alone, I don't believe it's possible. The Earth has naturally had temperatures rise and fall all over the globe, to extremes we've never been close to monitoring, and it had nothing to do with humanity before. What makes you think it's humanity now? Arrogance? The Earth is HUGE and maybe .05% of it is producing a reasonable quantity of these harmful gasses that are supposedly having global effects. Take a zillion steps back and measure the Earth. Then measure the largest, pollution-producing cities. It's not even close. The amount of gas naturally within the Earth's atmosphere in comparison to how much we actually affect is monstrously unfair in favor of nature. To believe we've had catastrophic affects on the global climate is a ridiculous notion.

99 % of scientists?

Are we talking about those same scientists that fudged numbers and asked other scientists to change numbers/not publish studies that didn't feed this global warming nonsense? Gee, sounds like some great science at work! Funny, you talk about scientists being bribed by oil companies as if the "other" side didn't engaged in the same tactics.

Crazy weather? Ummmm we've always had crazy weather. I have no doubt that the weather was just as crazy 200... 500... and 1000 years ago. The only difference is that more is being reported and more is being heard. Just 100 years ago it took weeks for news on one side of the globe to reach the other. Not exactly the same today with the Internet and cellphones.

As far as ideal temperatures, could anyone tell me what the "ideal" global temperature should be?
