What's new

So fire Corbin or not?

I have a lot of questions about Ty. However, no reason to get rid of him unless we know what the other options are. Good coaching is pretty rare and getting rid or someone who's not good enough doesn't by default get you the guy you need. That being said, I'd bring Phil Johnson back if he'd take it. I'd also trade Al Jefferson and a draft pick for Gregg Popovich.

First he's a turd, then the Jazz get as high as 3rd in the conference and he's a great coach, maybe even a dark horse for COTY. Then the Jazz fall below .500 and there are renewed cries to fire him and bring in someone with more experience. Oh yeah, and he's absolutely terrible for playing the vets too much and not developing the rookies and soph's.

Now the Jazz have come up with a couple of big wins, are 2 games over .500 and knocking on the door of the playoffs. Suddenly, Ty is a genius again for not putting too much pressure on the rookies early on and bringing them along slowly, making them "earn" their minutes, just as his mentor, Jerry Sloan, would have done.

Are all team boards this bipolar?
Oh of course not!...Come back to me when we start losing tho

I think that if the Jazz do make the playoffs, the general consensus around the league will be that Corbin did a great job balancing the imperative to win with the need to develop the young players, while keeping the veterans happy. I'm guessing that already this is what many people outside this discussion board are thinking. Although I am peeved at Corbin for some of his decisions (#1 being starting and playing Bell), I have to admit that in the grand scheme of things, he's done a pretty good job. I mean, this was one of the absolute worst teams in the league that second half of last season. All it's done is add a couple of rookies and one over the hill veteran and it's vying for a playoff spot in the loaded Western Conference, having beaten many of the top teams in both East and West, despite giving two two-year players and two rookies reasonably extended playing time. I think that those wishing for Corbin's departure are going to be sorely disappointed at the end of the day, even if we don't make the playoffs.

21 minutes for Favors tonight and 12 for Kanter. So basically nothing has changed. The team played well but he's still not developing the youth.

So I have no answer. Why are they playing better? I though it was because Bell and Jefferson were out. But tonight Jefferson played and the young guys went back to limited minutes and we beat one of the best teams in the league. What the hell do I know. I was calling for his head 2 weeks ago. Now I don't know.

Did you just?
First the Lakers, then the Durants, now you???

I have to run outside and see if the world is on fire.

Boler just said on the post-game that the Jazz just didn't "have enough bodies at the end". What a ****ing clown.

Burks was the only Jazz bench player to play more than 20 minutes. Kanter and Carroll got 11 each, Tinsley just 13. Favors at 19. Every Jazz starter played 50+ minutes.

DNPs for Watson, Evans and Bell.

Yeah what was the explanation for only playing Favors 16 minutes and Kanter 9 minutes in a 4OT game? (I didn't watch the game tonight)

The fact that the players are playing hard for Corbin is enough for me.

I don't really think that Phil was that great of a coach. It's easy to be a good coach when you have guys like MJ and Pippy, and Shaq and Kobe.
The thing Phil did was not lose his players attention.

If you read the book The Jordan Rules, in Phil's first few seasons with the Bulls, the players didn't like him much, MJ and Pippen both thought the triangle was stupid, and all the players were bitching about their minutes. And this was during the 91 season

Ty shouldn't be fired. I don't think he's done a bad enough job to warrant something like that.

However, I am not confident he's going to be The Guy who can take this team deep into the playoffs. I know that sounds flippant with so little to go on, but I just don't think he's a very good coach. In fact, I'd wager he's on the level of most guys who find their way leading NBA teams - probably not awful, but certainly not very good. Unfortunately, to be a really good team in this league, you not only need the talent, but a coach who's better than just decent enough.

Most NBA teams don't get that in any coach. They might have a serviceable guy run the team and keep things afloat for a bit, but, in the end, they rarely do anything spectacular. You know, a guy like Flip Saunders comes to mind when discussing those coaches. He wasn't awful in Minnesota, but when you got down to it, he only had one season where he led the Wolves out of the first round. Every other playoff appearance they saw under his guidance, seven straight, to be exact, ended in the first round.

Like I said, I don't think Ty is a bad coach. I think his job this season has been serviceable and a bit surprising, since, at the end of last year, I was totally under the impression he would suck. He hasn't. Good for him. He exceeded my expectations. Still, and maybe I'll be just as wrong about this as I was the last go-around, I don't see him as much more than what he is.

I don't know. Ever since he took over for Sloan, he's consistently felt like a temporary option. Just a placeholder until the Jazz go out and get a more experienced and established coach to lead the next generation of players. I know that's not how the Jazz see it, or they wouldn't have extended his contract or brought him back this year, but that's how he's always felt. An interim head coach. Tonight felt like the type of coaching you'd see from Kerry Rupp when he stepped in and replaced Majerus for the remainder of the '04 season.

Not a real coach - or at least a very good one.
