But then there's those who organize the events and want to represent themselves in human fashion. I just accept that organisators and license distributors like the IOC have angles. I still enjoy the athletes and competitions. But I think it's silly that you start questioning political impact just because it's in Russia. Look at it this way. The USA were involved in the first gulf war from 1980-1988. In 1988 it was decided that the 1996 summer games are taking place in Atlanta? Why would the USA try to get the rights for these games in the middle of a war that impacted their popularity around the world? I'd say to repair reputation globally in the future by showcasing hospitality and stuff. Same for Peking in 2008. Others wanted economical impact like Sydney in 2000. Since then with easier access to travelling/flying Australia has become one of the most popular countries to visit at least in Europe when planning a bigger visit(experience of a lifetime).
