What's new

Sorry Jazz fans – Ben is the NBA Rookie of the Year

You haven't read my full comments. I did say I am sensitive about the language I use and I am more than simple polite in social situations. Read it fully. I'm trying to show how it is a function of dishonesty. But in some situations it is better to be dishonest so as not to hurt someone, I agree with that.

There is no honesty in slur words; they are built on a foundation of cultural stereotypes, most of which are false, and they allow you to perpetuate those stereotypes within yourself.

Exactly. The only "truth" being spoken is the truth that the person using the word is prejudiced. Unless eenie-meenie wants to argue that being disabled is inherently worthy of ridicule. And that would be despicable.

It will be awkward when Lebron goes to Philly and Ben Simmons sits most 4th quarters.

I think my point is that when these words lose power, so do the cultural stereotypes.

Daniel Tosh has good enough skills to have his own show for a decade.

Sad thing is I think he is hilarious without the nonsense... and I can't stand to watch his show anymore because it is too crass and makes me grimace too much. He doesn't need the BS to be funny.

Also, Ben Simmons will never develop a jumper and is a stat hungry phony.

So you'd be fine with hurting people in the present in order for future generations to be able to use these slurs without fear of hurting anyone? Seems pretty heroic...

Look, people with disabilities, and people who know/love them, are not weaker than you simply because they take offense words that cash in on the idea that they are worthy of ridicule. I guarantee that in some ways they are often stronger than you. It's not a heroic feat to call someone a "retard."

Looks like this word is said on a daily basis on Jazzfanz. Go get em, guys.

Seems like another good reason to have this conversation here, then. The more people we can make aware of it, the better. As long as we're censoring words on this site, the R word ought to be added to the list. Until then, I'll push back every. single. time. I. see. it.
