Coach Gregg Popovich wants Mitchell to not just be a scorer but to “affect everybody else’s game.” He did that in a scrimmage Wednesday by scoring eight points, dishing out two assists, blocking one shot and recording one steal in just 4:40.

And so is the fact so many U.S. players decided to skip this tournament.

The global brand is already established with his signature shoes and his marketing appearances. I think he can legitimately make the jump to being considered a super star depending on what he does at the WC's. The U.S. wins and he's the 1st or 2nd leading scorer? He's there.

And IF the US wins, I hope Pops and US basketball tell players if the World Cup wasn't important enough to play for, then neither is the Olympics. Priority will be given to those who played this year and those who claimed "load management" or other stupid reasons for not playing can go load manage on their couches during the Olympics. Of course, there are a few that had legit reasons: those players can be injury replacements if needed.

This is exactly the type of work DM should be doing in the offseason. A focus on being a facilitator and improving his defense should help steer him into becoming an even more well-rounded star.
