Talking Heads

Just really gave them a listen. I knew they were wildly famous, but were before my generation... But holy crap.. They just dont come around like these guys anymore. I've listened to their greatest hits but any Talking Heads junkies on here? What are some underrated songs I should download?

lordy, lordy, lordy - some of the best dance club/party mix music EVER - takes me back to the days when I could be out til 3 AM and still get up and be at work by 8:30 AM. Then I had kids and life got real.
Some great stuff!

I wouldn't call myself a junkie by any means, I have two of their albums (yes, the 33 RPM vinyl kinds) that I probably haven't listened to in 20 years (no turntable) and I have no idea what would be considered some of their "under-rated" songs, but a couple I liked best include:

Talking Heads might be my most-obsessed-over band ever. I'm currently writing an article about them, actually.

I'd really recommend exploring them by listening to ALBUMs from start to finish. MORE STORIES ABOUT BUILDINGS AND FOOD is unimpeachably one of the best rock albums ever, and their Brazilian vamp stuff that follows on the heels of this is where stuff starts to get dancey (e.g. REMAIN IN LIGHT). But the bottom line is that the songs on their albums (especially the early ones) work together cohesively, like the preceding song leans into the one that follows it and helps construct it in some way.

Most critics in my circles seem to almost unanimously agree that their early work is a bit better. You can understand their evolution in performance terms: early on they were about a very stripped aesthetic -- purposefully draining the live shows of any formality and pomp (thus their "punk" roots); over time it became impossible for them to NOT add the explosions of energy, taking in their personages the distractions of the era (see Byrne's stuttering gestures).

By the way, the genius of David Byrne doesn't end with Talking Heads... he's still doing amazing stuff.

I was never a huge fan but they did have some great songs. This is probably my favorite

Track down a DVD of "Stop Making Sense".

And don't forget this fantastic side project:

Talking Heads were Radiohead before Radiohead.

I really dig a lot of their stuff, but Byrne is the alternative Sting. They both take themselves way too seriously. And I'm not a big fan of either's stuff outside of the bands in which they made their names.

This is just my opinion. I offer it at the risk of a potential dialogue about my incompetence; comparing TH to RH or The Police, or DB to Sting...

BTW - why is my computer trying to tell me DIALOGUE is a misspelling? I can't even trust spell check? I'm going to give those punks at Fisher Price a piece of my mind.

While concert movies are no longer really an art form; Stop Making Sense was ahead of its time. Which is why it's hard to believe it's over 25 years old. I still listen to the re-issue of the soundtrack that came out a few years ago.

I have the Naked CD in my office rotation and a couple of cassettes in my car. I'd like to expand the collection, but I rarely feel I have money to buy more CDs.
