What's new

the improbability of Joe Ingles' defense

Most fans never imagined he'd be this good on the defensive side. Hell, most coaches obviously thought he'd never do the stuff he's been doing. This thread is a firm tip of the cap to Joe and all the focus and attention he's given to getting better on both sides, but particularly on defense.

Ingles deserves some serious rep for keeping our necks above water through all the injuries. He's been a very important piece.

(Diaw was a cap-casualty in SAS, and it seems like he'll be one again here so we can keep Ingles)

Glad you made this post - I was thinking of making a similar one.

Mostly because I'm confused. How is it that the slowest, most unathletic player on the team also seem to be its most lockdown defender outside of Gobert?

I'm thrilled for Joe, I just don't understand how or why it's happening. Anyone with coaching experience who can share exactly what is contributing so much to Ingles' success here? Is it habits? Mentality?

I agree. Ingles has really stepped up on D and the 3 ball. Laughed at his late game stop of LeBron in ISO last night.

I wouldn't go overboard with the "lockdown defender" thing. He's just crafty and understands angles and positioning and has a little length. He couldn't keep it up for long stretches against really high quality players.

Been a big ingles fan since the end of his first year. Saw some nice potential in the second half of his first year. Last year he shot us back into several games and this year he's putting it all together. I thought he showed in stretches the last two years he was a good defender and has improved each year

I don't remember him being as good a defender in Europe, too.

who wouldve thought, back at the beginning of the season, that halfway through the season Exum would have a team worst dRtg (not including Alec's 16 minutes), and Ingles would have the best (Wing) dRtg?

not me.

I was sitting on the 8th row behind the basket and could not for the life of me figure out why Lebron was not dunking on Ingles every time. Somehow he was choosing to shoot fadeaways. I hope nobody can figure it out so Joe can keep it up without being exposed.

Because Ingles was playing solid position defense and had Lebron chose to dunk it he would have gotten an offensive foul. Ingles was in great position on defense throughout that game. Positioning is 75% (or more) of defense.

I have heard some Aussies on here compare his game to Larry Bird, and what he has in common with Larry is basketball IQ. This is why his play has been able to exceed his physical abilities. Also, he has a similar 3-point shot. Maybe another nickname for him could be the Aussie Bird, but Jingles does just fine because it captures his personality. Joe definitely has a better personality than Larry Bird.

at some point someone will torch him but i don't think it'll be regular ..

I was laughing out loud for about half the game last night. It was my favorite game of the season (right behind the Jazz vs Spurs win). Joe Ingles was a huge part of the run we had before the half. Then Lebron came back the second half and kicked our butts for about 5 minutes until Quin came to his senses and put Jingles back in on Lebron. I paid close attention to watch what would happen and the results? Lebron missed his next shot and 3 of his next 4.

Jingles is a solid nickname, but with all of the references to him as an old, fat, slow man... I propose a new nickname.

Joe Ingles should just be known as:

DAD
