Bryant says he also talks regularly with Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving, MVP candidates James Harden and Russell Westbrook, and Utah Jazz star Gordon Hayward, whom Bryant spent three days training with in Orange County last summer.

"I'm around for all the guys," Bryant tells ESPN.com. "Anybody can reach out. It's an open book."

When Bryant retired, he vowed he would pay it forward to help mentor the young players who succeeded him. So, when Hayward called him last summer and said he would be in the area, Bryant arranged for them to train together.

"I really love Gordon's game," Bryant says. "He's got versatility and size. He plays with great pace. You can't rush him into making a poor decision.

"He can shoot the long ball, he can hit midrange, he can take you in the post. I think he has a tremendous amount of potential."

Bryant said he and Hayward focused mostly on footwork and positioning during their three days together.

"We talked a lot about how to get to certain spots on the floor," Braynt says. "How you can get to that place that makes you comfortable. I told him, 'You know what you like to do. Figure that out first, then figure out where you can do it best.'"

Kobe said some very kind words about Hayward. I definitely think working out with Kobe helped him take his game to the next level. I expect Hayward to continue to improve and make it 8 straight seasons with a higher scoring average.

I hated Kobe with a passion when he was in his prime (mostly because he owned us), but I think it's cool that he's a willing mentor to the next generation of players. Ever since Haywards rookie year, Kobe always took a liking towards Hayward and always had nice things to say about him.

I hated Kobe back then. Now i dont hate him. Because he doesnt singlehandedly beat Utah in the playoffs anymore.

Careful Dudes, we are starting to sound like clutch fans...

Haha.. I'm sorry but it's hard for me to keep a straight face when listening to Kobe's "I'm an open book" speech.

Kinda reminds me of how he trolled Richard Branson here.

Ebony and Ivory live in perfect harmony...

Along wiht dropping over 20 on em in his rookie preseason, Kobe has always gushed about Hayward since that time we beat the lakers on the road, after DWill was traded.

I'll never forget that Favors screen which led to the vintage Hayward lefty dunk (with the crowd gasps after).

I am very much liking retired Kobe.

What year was it? I'd love to find it on YouTube.

Kobe's shtick has gotten weird post-retirement. I think he just wants to attach himself to every successful player to give himself shine.

This could very well be true. Or he could have an absolute love for the game much like ARod in baseball who everyone raves about as far as his genuine passion and eagerness to teach and help youngsters. We just don't know.

That said, the Kobe hate on this site is a little old by now. Dude is an all-time great who thrashed us. We don't like, we should've beaten him. But Boozer was too busy watching Kobe fly to the rim and Kirilenko was too busy playing WoW to give a damn as much as we did. Kobe worked his *** off and deserves his place with the elite. Even if he was a bit of a prick. Just like Jordan mind you.
