What's new

The NBA, Now VS. Then

Right and MLS probably makes less as an entire league than the top clubs in Europe do. It's THE aport over there. The EU has more people and a higher GDP than us. I don't think that we will automatically always be among the best just cuz we're mericans.
MVP is the person you're looking for.

Yeah, cuz I said that would happen automatically (I never even said it would happen period, I just asked you if you saw NFL getting less popular in the next 50 years).

I can see the NFL hemorrhaging fans as the young get old and the old get dead. I kind of hope it happens. Better sports can take its place (not ****ing baseball).

it was a silly question to ask me. I wasn't talking about the NFL. Hence the what? In my reply to you.

I do think the NFL is fading but they have got a long way to fall. Still we have the NBA the MLB and NHL 4 MLS to compete with. I just don't see how the MLS will ever be able to come on par with other leagues. I could be wrong which is why I said I doubt it instead of no way.

Isn't MLB declining too?

Yeah but the way I see it they're making room for MLS but not enough room for it to compete with Europe

Maybe if for some reason soccer declined over there but that doesn't seem to be happening

Soccer also benefits from the demographic trend over the next couple of decades. It might eventually make it.

Maybe as an American I'm overestimating soccer's hold on the rest of the world but I don't think I am. Even if soccer was to become the most popular sport in America to the point it displace the NBA NFL MLB and NHL it seems to me that MLS would still have a hard time competing. The eastern hemisphere in the next 50 years is going to have a huge media advantage. Beyond the current audience as countries develop there's a huge time zone advantage to staging games in front of so many God damn eyeballs. A mid-afternoon game in London is prime time for most of the world. A mid-afternoon game in LA is in the middle of the night for most of the world.

Right now in this moment in time if MLS was as popular as NFL in America then maybe it is the best league in the world but a hell of a lot more than just what is the most popular sport in America is going to happen over the next 50 years. America has been the indispensable Nation for what 60 years? Seriously we kind of live in a weird time but people think it's going to continue forever. Sooner or later the Americas will go back to being the Frontiers on the edge of the world.

Do you ever see college sports falling? Seems like eventually people will smarten up and realize they are exploiting them for insane amounts of money.

I think the mid 90's were a golden age of basketball, almost on par with what we are experiencing now. The 80's were probably third best, and the rest is whatever.

The NBA needs expansion teams for the league's popularity. They could handle 4-6 more teams right now, but will probably do Seattle and Mexico City first, then a couple down the road a few years.

The thing that would probably improve the popularity of the league is having some crappier players in the league due to more roster spots. Players will probably team up less of they can be the man on a team. That happens more of there are more teams. Let concentration of talent makes for more popular basketball, even though it's not as good. The good players look a lot better that way.

The NBA doesn't need to expand. 4 divisions would be better so maybe they expand to 32.(honestly 28 would be a better product)

What the NBA needs to do is to sell local tv contracts as a division instead of by individual team. Jazz, Blazers, Nuggets, OKC, Twolves should be a package deal.
