What's new

The official: Please tank properly this year.

We are riding a bunch of vets and somehow still find ourselves down big at home against a Magic team that's running their young guys

Oh now that I see the replay Keyonte was drifting to the 3pt like and Kelly threw it like he would go for 2. Kelly was right. Jazz only need one and Kelly wa throwing into a wide open middy

We are not tanking this year. We have a couple guys (Including an all-star) that are too good to make that happen.
We are likely gonna be a middling team striving for a playoff spot.

BUT
That's what makes us special. We have a couple promising young guys + a **** load of picks.
We are "rebuilding" in a way we haven't before.

I am shocked that a poorly coached team has communication issues on crucial inbound plays.

Play young guys we suck.

Play old vets we still suck.

We gonna suck either way so it's not really all that difficult to decide between the two

How dumb is our front office for not tanking properly last year.

Wemby looks unbelievable.

I've talked to jazz fans who say a 14% chance of getting him wasn't worth it. Those people are clowns for thinking that. The spurs are going to be contenders for the next 10 years because of a single player.

We will struggle with rebuilding and probably draft a clown like Kanter if we ever get a top 3 pick again. What a nightmare situation we are in.

If you really look at the roster the Jazz front office put together, it's clear that this team isn't designed to win much. Clarkson and Sexton absorb a lot of minutes, but are below-average defenders with limited efficiency on offense. None of our guards shoot well enough to consistently space the floor. Guys either don't shoot enough 3s or don't make enough 3s. Our forwards have size and athleticism, but still lack the ability to self-create. THT has been given a prominent role because he's really the only one who can drive and kick or drive and dish to set up our bigs. Jazz rebound well and guard the interior well when they're big, but this is a 30 - 35-win team. Jazz will win when they shoot the lights out, or at least when both Lauri and Clarkson have efficient enough offensive games. Otherwise, they'll have a hard time manufacturing offense consistently.

The main problem the Jazz are having with these B2Bs isn't fatigue so much as a lack of time to prepare. The Jazz need time to really gameplan against the other team, particularly on the defensive end.

I’m rooting for the Jazz tank. The Sixers have five first round picks and a lot of expiring contracts for Markkanen. He’d be beautiful next to Embiid and Maxey.

Only way to trank properly is to trade Lauri and probably need to trade couple of others as well. Doing that and burying this iteration at this point would be the most ridiculous overreaction in the history of any sports.

Everyone sees where the warts in this team are:
Our best guard is THT and we have to give 6th man caliber Clarkson superstar leash and minutes because thats all we got.

Its pretty simple what we are doing. We have a great all-star/all-NBA player entering his prime. We want to win around him. We dont quite have enough talent to be good but we can be a play in or above that team once we get going. Then use our million picks to make a big trade or 2 big trades for great players when they become available. We are in a great spot right now.

We cant tank without trading away Lauri. Its very dumb to trade him away.

On my opinion, things are more complicated that it seems. Getting star players is pretty difficult if not impossible for small market as us. When i look at OKC, Minny..... they ended beeing pretty good because of the draft and add one or 2 relevants pieces. But i do not believe we have a chance to land a star in SLC. So sayinng that, i think there is only 2 options :

- Thanks hard one year and hope get a gem at the draft as did SA.
- Use all our pick to get valuable player ( Conley, Rudy level., we won't get higher that that). Work on chemistry, and if Keyonte, THT and the young core keep improving, we may be very good in 3 years.

In a less competitive west you would be correct that we would need to trade Lauri to tank properly but in this west that is definitely not the case. As currently assemble this team is probably a bottom 5 team in the west. To tank properly this year all we really need to do is trade Olynyk and Clarkson once he is able to be traded and make a concerted effort to get all the young guys in the rotation. Then you just strategically rest guys to give some of the young guys heavy minutes games. The only team that we may be have a difficult time out tanking are the blazers if Scoot continues to struggle. You can already make a case that the spurs may be better than us and the rockets have no interest in tanking with their pick only being top 4 protected. Right now the griz are awful but they get a superstar back after 25 games which should make them very competitive.

Another oversimplification. Why would Lauri sign a renegotiation/extension in a scenario like that? He would be signing away the rest of his prime, with a near certainty that the losing would continue for several years at least.

Of course, it may be that Markkanen is in fact not a critical centerpiece anymore for the next, post-tank iteration of this team. Ainge may hold that opinion, for instance. But in that case, he should be traded ASAP if tanking is on the menu anyway. His immediate value right now is off the charts and he could bring back an up-and-coming player with obvious star potential.

That is the logical, if drastic, move.

He talked about proper tanking, and to me that means getting to the top 4 group in lottery odds. East cellar teams matter in that math as well.
