The Sweet Science: Boxing

Only in the USA, my blood is still boiling over it, I don't even want to watch the replay cuz I know it's only going to confirm what I saw live.

That fight happens anywhere else and Kovalev wins it by 2+ rds on all cards.

At the very worst they should've scored it a draw. Kovalev didn't lose that fight..

the undercards seemed to be judged by judges in the promoters pocket as well..

Always the same story with the judges in the States, the noble art is losing credibility because of this!

Lomo, for my $$, is the most brilliant fighter throwing hands on the planet, bar none. He's got a 65" reach too LOL, doesn't matter. Walters reach is 73".

Here's the full fight, see for yourselves.

Outclassed doesn't even do what took place last night justice, he completely took Walters right hand away and beat the fight out of him.

Ok boxing nerds, here’s some stats for you! With Vasyl Lomachenko’s dominant performance over Nicholas Walters this past weekend,

he now becomes #1 on CompuBox’s Plus/Minus list with a connect percentage differential of +20.9 — marking the highest rating since Floyd Mayweather (+24.5).

The Plus/Minus differential takes into account a boxers percentage of punches landed minus the percentage of punches landed on them. As of right now, the top 10 fighters in the Plus/Minus category are as follows:

Vasyl Lomachenko (+20.9)

Gennady Golovkin (+15.1)
Andre Ward (+15.1)
Erislandy Lara (+14.4)
Naoya Inoue (+14)
Terence Crawford (+12.1)
Lamont Peterson (+11.7)
Juan Francisco Estrada (+11.6)
Roman Gonzalez (+11.6)
Adrien Broner (+11)
Taking a look strictly at the defensive aspect, Lomachenko also rates #1 on opponents total connect percentage against, putting him even above the defensive wizard in Guillermo Rigondeaux. The top 10 in the category goes like this:

Vasyl Lomachenko (16.1%)

Guillermo Rigondeaux (16.8%)
Erislandy Lara (19.1%)
Terence Crawford (20.9%)
Juan Francisco Estrada (21.3%)
Arthur Abraham (21.5%)
Naoya Inoue (21.9%)
Andre Ward (22%)
Wladimir Klitschko (22.3%)
Carlos Cuadras (22.4%)
This stat is pretty interesting considering that Lomachenko fights more offensively than RIgondeaux, which in theory should make him more vulnerable to an opponent’s counter attack.

Lomachenko averages about 10 more punches thrown per round than does the Rigonadeaux (59.5 - 49.4), while Lomachenko also nearly doubles Rigondeaux’s average punches landed per round (22 - 11.6).

Considering how highly Rigondeaux’s boxing skills are held, the fact that Lomachenko can be more effective both offensively and defensively is pretty darn impressive. It should be noted, however, that Rigondeaux still occupies the #1 position when it comes to strictly defending power punches. The top 10 in opponent’s power punch connect percentage is as follows:

Guillermo Rigondeaux (19.9%)
Vasyl Lomachenko (22.7%)
Erislandy Lara (24.1%)
Wladimir Klitschko (24.8%)
Andre Ward (26.7%)
Lamont Peterson (27.9%)
Terence Crawford (28.3%)
Juan Francisco Estrada (28.8%)
Keith Thurman (29.3%)
Carlos Cuadras (29.5%)

Keep an eye on this undefeated 30yo Polish heavyweight(17-0-0 14ko's) of Nigerian descent. He just signed a deal with Al Haymon.

He's a stablemate of one of the top heavyweights in the world NZ's Joseph Parker(pictured below) who I've mentioned here before.

Commey won that fight easily and the Russian judges robbed him. He should've knocked him out tho. can't let that go to decision just weeks after the Kovalev gets robbed vs Ward..

JOSEPH PARKER will now be co-promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank as the unbeaten New Zealander prepares to fight Andy Ruiz for the vacant WBO world heavyweight title this weekend.

Arum will work alongside Duco Events, Parker’s main promoters, to build the fighter’s profile in America and China.

The news ensures that Arum – who promotes Ruiz – will have a world heavyweight champion after this weekend, regardless of who wins.

“Listen, having been in this business 50-plus years, I don’t expect anybody to win a fight, particularly when it’s as close on paper as this one is,” he said.

“I really think that the winner of this fight probably has the best chance to be the preeminent heavyweight, I really believe that.

“Parker has natural skills, he’s so big and he punches so hard and Andy has the fastest hands that I’ve seen on a heavyweight since Muhammad Ali.”

The winner of the fight will have 90 days to fight mandatory challenger Hughie Fury.

I really wish there was a different sort of way to organize boxing. The politics of the sport completely ruin the sport for me.

And I say this as someone who's watched boxing for longer than any other sport in my life
