So they bring their 5 month old to that Sac hospital with flu-like symptoms, the doctors do EKG, hear heart murmurs and tell the parents they should do heart surgery. NOW. The parents take their kid to another hospital (Kaiser) where the doctors say the child is not in immediate danger and can be safely discharged to their parents. Meanwhile, the first hospital calls Child Protection Services on the parents, cops burst in their home, hands on guns, rough up the guy and take the child away. Child still in CPS custody. Parents are trying to get it back. Incredible!

The parents won their battle and have custody of the kid back. While on the surface, this story is complete bull ****, at it's very core you've got a few people who thought they were doing the right thing for a child. In the end, nobody died, nobody is going to jail, and nobody is the worse for wear. If it were me and my kid, oh I would be hell bent on kicking some *** -- as it stands, I find this story rather meh.

I'm sure it's Obama's fault anyway.

Well, you know what they say: "the road to hell is paved with good intentions"... I don't give a damn that Sutter Medical wanted the best for the child. They are not their parents, who are clearly well educated, with utmost concern for their daughter's well being. If they chose to go to another place, it is their prerogative.

Generally speaking, for a while I've had a beef with the current CPS system, where pretty much anyone can claim you're mistreating your child, call CPS on you have you prove you are not a monster. I understand the "someone think of the children" meme that has created this system (and is supported by many) but IMO government should tread more gently in the parental intervention.

I'm not disagreeing with you, and you have valid points. This made me think of two things: First, people are damned if they do, damned if they don't. Remember the Josh Powell fiasco? For all we know, these CPS people could have prevented some atrocity that we'll never know about. If they hadn't acted, that kid could be the third victim of a mass murder/suicide. (pure hypothetical, but seriously, how many people bitched out CPS for not stepping in and doing more for the Powell kids?) My second thought was, I'd like to know the details of the story. I think CPS has some pretty strict guidelines about how/when /where they can do this kind of thing. Were the parents combative? Were they drunk? Were they high? What exactly made Sutter Medical choose to call CPS? The actual facts behind this story might not be nearly as impressive as the headlines are making this story out to be.

Combatative? Who knows, I watched the interview and the mother said the hospital staff started raising their voices and ordering them around. There must have been some type of conflict going on. However, think about you in such situation. I know you, and you would kick some doctor's *** if you think they are mistreating your precious girls. Parents in such situations are sometime overreactive. I doubt they were drunk or high. They checked didn't check out their kid properly - just took it and went to the second hospital, but I would do the same if I see the hospital staff trying to force me into something I do not agree with. Then there is CPS, if there is a second opinion that contradicts what they have been called for, they certainly should've backed out of the situation....

Dunno man, imagine that bull**** happening to you... I'd be suing the **** out of Sutter Medical if I were them. The emotional distress they caused to these parents is far worse than a lot of nonsensical "emotional distress" trials we hear about in the news...

The cynical me says the hospital are greedy corporate hacks and when they couldn't shake the parents or their insurance out of a good heart surgery (50k at least), they called CPS. I know it is not right, but it fits what I think of them now.
