Tour of Utah thread

I'd love to participate in one but I suck at keeping my line and riding in groups. Then again, I don't ride often enough to fix it.
 
I love the Tour of Utah. It's so cool that we have a cycling event of this caliber in Utah. This year I've had the opportunity to ride in one of the cars following the race on Stage 5 (which is probably the one that stranded Jamezz), I've ridden my bike to watch the cyclists go up many of the climbs (yesterday was epic), and I've met most of the top athletes. I've been to many other events like the Tour de France, the Tour of California and the Tour de Georgia, and this one is comparable in quality in almost every way. Unfortunately we simply don't have the population to support our race to the extent that some of those other communities can.

I'll be forever grateful to Larry H. Miller Dealerships and all of the other sponsors who bring us this amazing e,vent and my fingers are crossed that it continues for many years to come. Pro road cycling is a very complex and fascinating sport. The tactics are misunderstood and under appreciated by most American sports fans. If you can find the time, get up to see the race today. The climb up Empire Pass (where I'll be) is an absolute leg breaker.

I am a fan of cycling, I used to watch Giro d'Italia, Vuelta de España and of course le Tour de France all the time in the summer while I was living back in Spain. There is a lot of tactics to it, you need to know when to attack, what your role is, try to help the leader of your team go on a fast run so you try to accompany him for as long as you can etc... It is a fascinating sport.I only wished I could have seen a prime Miguel Indurain (Spain) vs. Lance Armstrong in their prime, that would have been gold :)

Nah dude. That literally may have saved his life. No way he comes close to getting slow enough before he hits some very big trees.

Yup, not to mention the chance of being impaled by a branch, or land weird on some rock.

It doesn't matter if he stops. Force is squared. If he slows down by half he reduces the force to a 1/4. High speed + stopping on a dime = painful. Cuts and scratches vs broken bones.

Those are Aspen and Spruce. Aspen won't have 'impalers' that low. Spruce is cushy. I've jumped out onto spruce bows 50+ feet up(cuz it's easier than climbimg down) it doesn't hurt. The saplings at the roadside are supple and flexible. They would have slowed him down considerably without breaking off. Way better than hitting the broadside of an SUV at high speed.
