Utah Jazz Select Ace Bailey, Pick 5

From Reddit

"I've lived near or around San Antonio most of my life and you'd be surprised by the number of role players that aren't the Big 3, George Gervin, and David Robinson still live here. George Hill has a big *** ranch outside of town, Antonio Daniels, Bruce Bowen, Antonio Daniels live here, and Alvin Robertson/Bryn Forbes have a fun relationship with local law enforcement."

"A grip of Kings players still stay in Sacramento area. Doug Christie and Brad Miller, and Peja Stojakovic. Vlade Divac as well...Kenny Thomas is still around"

lol

This reminds me of Bill Burr's joke about googling "I'mright.com"

In 2023 Collier was the #1 high school prospect. In 2024 Bailey was the #2 high school prospect (I don't think Bailey was ever touted higher than Flagg at any point).

I had mentioned it will be sweet to see Collier tossing dimes to Bailey but another cool connection is that the two guys went to high school 11 miles from one another. Hopefully they can bond over that and Collier's humble nature will rub off on Bailey.

Flagg/Bailey were in different classes til the final year.

I think that Sacramento and San Antonio are pretty comparable to SLC as a relatively small urban area in the less-than-desirable location. Nevertheless, somehow there are way more retired NBA players who still live in there. On the other hand, once they finished playing for the Jazz their players move the heck out and away from Utah. Even Deron is apparently a part-timer.

I just want to say that it is hard to blame Ace for being less-than-enthusiastic. I am sure that the Jazz are very used to dealing with disappointed draftees and traded players. It is just part of doing business.

A handful of examples of players staying in San Antonio and Sacramento doesn't prove that players who have played for Utah mostly hate it post-career.

But who knows, maybe you can do another Reddit search for stories of even more players who have stayed in other places.

I've been to San Antonio and Sacramento. Sacramento is pretty good, is near the mountains and outdoor opportunities, is much less expensive than the Bay Area (or was), and not a bad place at all. San Antonio, IMHO, is a dump. Didn't like it at all. I generally strongly dislike Texas.

The one difference, and perhaps a telling one, is that living in Utah brings along a good deal of Mormon cultural baggage. If that's really not your thing, and it's not surprising if it's not for 20-30 something African American males, Utah can be a hard sell. I'm not a fan of the Utah culture, per se, but I love living here. But then, I'm big into the outdoors, and being minutes away wilderness areas, skiing, and other outdoor activities is huge for me. Plus, I find SLC offers most cultural and other leisure a things I like here. However, I'm not sure SLC and Utah offers NBA players the lifestyle and cultural activities they are used to or desire.

Karl Malone and John Stockton re-signed with us, that has to mean something.

Mark Eaton lived at Jeremy Ranch
Thurl Bailey definitely still lives here
Believe Antoine Carr was a permanent resident until he died. One of my favorite Jazz players
Those are one's I can think of
Thurl is a LDS member. That is certainly one of the ways to recruit NBA players (and executives!) to like living in Utah but it is somehow underutilized.
