Keith McGill plans to do most of his talking on the field

Newcomer Keith McGill was the talk of camp as the junior-college transfer consistently stood out as one of the Utah Utes’ best performers.

The only one who wasn’t talking about McGill was the defensive back himself.

McGill put himself on media lockdown for much of the camp because he felt he stood out from his teammates not for the skills he was showing, but for what wasn’t showing on his helmet.

A Utah tradition maintains players have to earn the drum and feather that adorns their helmets by making a couple of good plays, showing hustle, etc.

Utah’s coaches started awarding the logos the first day of camp, but as good as McGill was, he kept getting passed over.

“Coaches told me they were holding me to higher expectations, and I felt I was letting my team down because I didn’t have the drum and feather,” he said. “My name was getting called after practice [for interviews] and I didn’t feel like I deserved it. I wanted to prove to the team I had it.”

So McGill put himself on media lockdown until he earned the coveted logo. He finally got one the last week of camp.

“I hustled everywhere and made a couple plays,” he said. “It felt great. I put it on my helmet as soon as I got it. I was given everything in high school, so I took earning it real serious.”
Even though he has lifted his media ban, McGill, who is slated to start at free safety, still plans to keep earning the right to wear the logo.

“I take it real serious,” he said. “It’s my upbringing.”

I haven't seen him play but McGill already is impressing me

Anyone know if the game is on TV tonight? It says it's on KJAZZ but I looked on Comcast and it's not on the schedule to play. Worried.

Does anyone know of any options for us out-of-staters that don't get KJZZ? Does someone on Justintv normally broadcast Ute games?

Gotta be honest. I was not all that impressed with Utah's performance in this 1st game. I hope they ran a vanilla offense to not show USC much, but it sure seemed like they shut down after the 1st quarter.

White looked good, o-line looked good, didn't think Wynn (sp?) looked that great, just had a lot of check downs. I would take Montana State's QB over him. Of course, I'm a Montana State fan....you guys were just bigger, stronger, faster and overall better than us. Wasn't happy with how we played in the first half, but was proud of my team in the second half and was proud we kept your starters in the entire game.

Agreed completely, kind of left the game with a 'meh' feeling about our performance. a 3 point 2nd half vs. Montana State just isn't good any way you think about it.

The only notable thing to get excited about was John White, he was as good as advertised

Yea white looked good.

I'm not sure if Utah's going to be any good this year, they did look like they had some huge holes, but I think we'll know at SC. They'll be up for that game and they'll be showing as much of the playbook as they have. It seemed like you guys were just playing kind of ho hum, though Montana State did seem to be quite a bit better than your average cake walk game. We'll know if your corner backs are any good with Barkley throwing at them. We'll know if your O-line can pass protect by how they play against against SC's front line guys.

I don't know that I would redshirt Langi after all now. It seems like your ground game might be your best weapon this year, and he would be a better #2 option than Vakapuna I think. Might be worth going through the growing pains with him right now.

Happy with the win of course and maybe it's because I was already concerned over the O-Line but IMO they were the most disappointing part of the game for me. I understand the first game of the season, understand it's a new OC with a new offense, I understand it's not wanting to show too much for USC and even understand (but don't like) that it looked like they letup a little after going up 24-0. I just don't think the O-Line was as dominate as they should've been especially on passing plays, now some of that is Wynn and he is my 2nd biggest issue watching the game last night, hopefully they get things straightened by next week or it could get ugly.

Oh yes and I realize the starting LT Cullen wasn't dressed but still, the only positive I can think is with all the minor injuries all across the O-Line is it will give a little experience across the depth (two's and three's).
