Utes 2011 Football Discussion

Second? Really? So if we lumped all the teams together, the Utes would have the 2nd best conference record? Interesting.

Have fun in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl. Go get 'em.
Utes, if we lump all the teams in the South division, Utah has the second best overall record. If we look at the entire conference, Utah has the 4th best overall record.

Yes. It is wrong. Utahr is nowhere near being in the race for the Pac-12 title game.
Utah absolutely is in the race for the South division, and by extension, the title game. In fact the most likely scenario is Utah finishes tied for the lead but loses out on tiebreakers.

Yeah, because that's what I was asking Copernicus.
Well what were you asking? I said Utah has the second best overall record in the division, 4th best in the conference. You responded by asking about tiebreakers. There are no tiebreakers with overall record, lol.

If you're talking about division standings (which is where there are tiebreakers), then USC doesn't count. If you're saying to ignore the division standings and just look at what happens on the field, well that is the overall record, correct?

As a Utah fan, I am satisfied with this season. All things considered, it could have been much worse. First season in a major conference, with the injuries they've endured, middle of the conference is not bad. For some reason, utah's detractors believe that anything less than walking in and immediately dominating the PAC12 is a failure. That's some twisted logic, but whatever suits one's agenda, I guess.

As for the notion of it all being downhill from here for the Utes, I guess we'll see. But that's a pretty bold prediction after just one season.

If the Utes win the final 2 games (which they will) I don't see how any Ute fan can be disappointed.

Like the coach said, there have been 7 or 8 major season ending injuries. Combine that with a bunch of new coaches and a new offensive system, and this year is not bad at all.

That will put Utah in the top 2 in the division at the end, and the top 4 in the conference when it's all said and done (at worst, could actually be better).

Pretty good, all things considered.

Holy piss, this thread went ape **** while I was at work. It was like 6 pages longer than when I left.

They lost when they joined the PAC-12. Their facade of success will slowly wither and you're homerism will with it. Either that or you'll go into full blown delusional spin mode if you haven't already.

This is probably one of the most short-sighted comments on this subject that I've seen thus far. Utah is a strong program and is probably only going to get stronger. While they are not Oklahoma, Alabama, etc, they have a great AD, a great HC and a clear vision of where this thing needs to be headed. In regards to Utah football, AD Chris Hill has had this team trending upwards ever since he hired Ron McBride over 20 years ago. If you think every single little thing that's happened over the last 20+ years for Utah football have simply been a happy accident for the Utes, you're the one who is delusional.

I wouldn't worry too much about the Utes, they're going to be fine. You're more than welcome to ignore them and continue your annual song and dance of "this is finally the year" for your FSU Semanoles to return to the past glory that they've been chasing for about a decade now.

And yet Florida State is ranked while Utah is not.

Suck it.

First time in, how long? Yeah, they're really tearing it up in the juggernaut that is the ACC.

You're kidding, right? There are an entire three teams in the PAC-12 with seven or greater wins. Wow, how impressive. The ACC has five already. The love for wherever Utah is, no matter the conference, is a joke. And I'm not even saying the ACC is necessarily better. But the PAC-12 is just as average.

Really? I thought that's what being a fan was about. Or do you mean that it's unreasonable to be a fan of a school that isn't a top tier football school? Being from Utah, I'm probably not smart enough to figure it out.

Don't kid yourself. Sagarin:

and ESPN:
https://espn.go.com/blog/statsinfo/post/_/id/31817/upsets-dont-impact-conference-rankings

Both currently have, and have all season, the PAC 12 higher than the ACC. Not only that, but the PAC 12 is closer to passing the Big 10 than it is to falling below the ACC in both.

It's not just as average.

I guess if the bottom of the PAC 12 sucked the top would have more wins. But with so many conference games, if the teams are all good there will be fewer wins.

Wow. Reading this thread is proof that BYU is officially the little brother. You guys are like a bunch of Chihuahuas yipping at the bigger dogs. You guys are just lucky Salty gets his jollies poking you.
