This is the highest Utah has ranked this early into the season ever. In 2004, after being 2-0, the Utes were 15th. In 2008, they were 22nd.

Going from unranked to 14th after beating Pitt and UNLV? Media giving the Utes a LOT of respect.

Positive spin: Media is finally realizing how good the Utes generally are now after years of ignorance.

Negative spin: Media only recognizing the Utes because they're going to be in the PAC-10 next year.

This is much higher than I thought it would be. I expected them to jump maybe a place or two. UNLV is not exactly the kind of win that should propel a team through the polls.

Congrats to Utah. The higher they are, the more it'll help BYU when they beat the Utes to end the season. ;-)

I think that's about fair. I think it would be interesting if Utah went undefeated just to see, like mentioned above, how they are perceived going down the stretch now that they are a year away from officially being part of the club. Those other teams in the mid-tier of the rankings have been pretty sketchy thus far though. USC specifically has played like, well, like they have nothing to play for.

With the teams that lost in front of Utah, it was kinda hard not to put them in the 14-to-15 range.

I don't think it's too out of line to have Utah at 14, but there's still some things that worry me. They weren't up mentally at the beginning of the UNLV game. They've got a string of 4 more very winnable games in a row. If they're not mentally ready for each and every one, it will cost them eventually.

Air Force, TCU, Notre Dame and BYU will all get their attention. The great teams bring it week in and week out regardless of who they're playing. The jury is certainly still out as to whether this team has what it takes to be "great".

On the bright side, the QB situation looks great. When your back-up QB is 8-and-1 as a starter, you have a luxury that almost no other team in D1 has.

With their schedule over the next 5 weeks, it will be much harder for Utah to make a major jump in the polls (as it should be) considering who they'll be facing. Right now, I don't think they're ready for the final stretch of their schedule which begins with Air Force.

Maybe they should consider going to a 2-QB system. It seems to be a proven part of winning teams.

Dont know how to link to other sites but I saw somewhere that byu was top 5 among independent schools.

1) Notre Dame
2) Navy
3) Army
4) (left blank)
5) byu

Independence Busters!

Where's little brother on that list? Oh wait . . .

*Yawn. You REALLY need some new material (now I'm waiting for the invevitable "look at lil bro getting all bent out of shape" - post).

Jumping that high is pretty surprising. I doubt it's getting much attention outside of Utah, where the love-fest for Boise State continues. I heard on the radio this morning that BSU fans are trying to spin the whole Va Tech loss to their advantage by claiming that Va Tech was obviously still in recovery mode from playing Boise.

Utah went independent and changed their name?

No, it's kind of like when you're all grown up and you still try to pick on your little brother, only now he's a couple inches taller, has a hotter girlfriend and just got hired making double what you do with a better health and 401K plan to boot. In other words, he's not your "little brother" anymore, and the more you try to live in the past the more pathetic you look.

Wow, what a comeback. Good one, Shecky.

Apparently this guy is his comedic icon

I don't feel like reading through these posts and don't know how the Utes schedule plays out but I'll just give my own analysis on the teams ahead of them.

Nebraska or Texas/Oklahoma will make the championship game. The other team will be Boise, TCU, or Utah.
