Nick Van Exel: Former NBA Star's Son Charged With Murder

Nickey Maxwell Van Exel, son of former NBA star Nick Van Exel, was arrested and charged with capital murder in Texas on Thursday.

The report from the Associated Press says that the victim was the younger Van Exel's close friend, 23-year-old Bradley Bassey Eyo.

According to Van Exel's attorney, Paul Johnson, his client shot Eyo with a shotgun while the two were engaged in "horseplay." He said that Van Exel did not know the gun was loaded.

Panicked, Van Exel moved the body from his Garland home to Lake Ray Hubbard on the outskirts of Dallas, where he stashed the body and threw the shotgun in a creek.

"It's a real sad situation," said Johnson. "Emotions are running high, and, obviously, we recognize that some very bad decisions were made on how he responded."

Eyo's body was found on Sunday, and Van Exel turned himself in and confessed to the crime on Wednesday night. He is being held on $1 million bond.

His father, Nick Van Exel, played 13 seasons in the NBA with six different teams.

Moved. And if what Van Exel's attorney is claiming is right, it's more like involuntary manslaughter. Guess the courts will figure that one out.
 
Shot him with a shotgun during horseplay... right. I don't know about you guys but I pretend to have gun battles in my living room on a nightly basis, so I don't see what the big deal is.

Exactly.

You see this kind of thing now and then, very sadly, with kids like 12 or 14 years old who find dad's gun and it happens to be loaded so they tragically kill their friend (it happened where I grew up when I was 14 to a kid in my school, very sobering).

But a 23 year-old? Strange.
 
I don't know. I grew up with a lot of white trash neighbors and the things they did, while drunk & sober, would have you damning mankind for the remainder of your existence.

The fundamental NRA rules for safe gun handling are:

1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
This is the primary rule of gun safety. A safe direction means that the gun is pointed so that even if it were to go off it would not cause injury or damage. The key to this rule is to control where the muzzle or front end of the barrel is pointed at all times. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances.

2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
When holding a gun, rest your finger on the trigger guard or along the side of the gun. Until you are actually ready to fire, do not touch the trigger.


3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
Whenever you pick up a gun, immediately engage the safety device if possible, and, if the gun has a magazine, remove it before opening the action and looking into the chamber(s) which should be clear of ammunition. If you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber(s), leave the gun alone and get help from someone who does.

The basic rules I'm more familiar with:
BASIC GUN SAFETY RULES - Anyone who touches a firearm should know these by heart.

1. Treat every firearm as if it were loaded.

2. Never allow the muzzle to point at anything you are not willing to see destroyed.

3. Be sure of your target and know what lies behind it.

4. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are aligned on target.

5. Be sure your guns are never accessible to unauthorized or untrained individuals.

In my opinion anyone in possession of a firearm who causes injury or damage and was not following these rules should be charged as though the act was intentional.
