What is the catch with Gobert?

Nobody needs him to score. I personally don't think that is the biggest reason why he wasn't picked higher. The biggest reason from what I have read and watched is he his a HORRIBLE post defender. He gets pushed around like crazy. They back him down with ease. They push him under the basket than lay it up. The guys that were doing this to him were much much smaller than him. I am not so high on him. I think Jeff Withey is a better player. BUT Gobert has much more potential.
The key to Gobert staying in the league is not whether he can have an offensive game or not. Its can he bulk up and learn to guard the post? Not the best defensive rebounder also because he cannot hold his position either. Don't have so many high expectations for this kid. He has a long ways to go before we should be really excited.
Gobert is great at help defense. He is amazing at pick and roll defense. He is amazing at getting tip balls and tipping it into the basket.

He already is really really good at those things. BUT if he never learns to play post defense he will be out of the league. I am sure the Jazz are aware of this because it seems to be widely known in his scouting reports. Watch this video on his weaknesses towards the end. I ignore the scoring part. He will never be asked to do so on this team. Kanter OR Favors will always be in the game with him(If Corbin is smart so.......lol).

Yeah OK, but I would say this:

1. He will grow into that frame. He's only 21.

2. We already have 2 decent post defenders with thick bodies in Favors & Kanter. Gobert would likely play with 1 of these guys.

3. Less and less teams have low post scoring C or PF. If needed to, we can just throw Favors/Kanter to guard them. While Gobert can roam the paint to block shots.

4. The way the league is going, there's a lot of Westbrooks/Rose/Wade/SF slasher types. Gobert is tailored made of these types of players. He has long arms and if he goes straight up - that's not a foul in the NBA for the defensive player. If he can learn to do that & alter shots without fouling, he's a great asset to have.

Bennet will be just as good as any of the others in the top 7. I'm certain you never saw one unlv game this year.

He's a talent no doubt offensively. I'm still a bit worried about him defensively... is he big enough to guard the likes of David West as a PF? Can he chase around the likes of LeBron as a SF?

Also why not trade down, pick up an asset and pick him at #5? I doubt he'll go that high.

All the college guys on the post draft show backed up Bennett being selected number one. In this draft it was just who you preferred. Cleveland wanted a stretch four and they got the best one in the draft.

He would have went third. He is better than Otto and time will prove this. Bennet can guard fours no doubt. He just was not willed too. Mike brown will correct this.

I think the Cavs envisioned Kyrie and Bennett playing PnR together and yes I do agree that is a deadly combination. Varejao is certainly big enough to roam the pain by himself I suppose... he's hardly ever healthy though.

I'm not homering on him because he is certainly not perfect. He can be lazy, but he was nursing injuries which we found out after the season. He was an absolute beast the first half of the season. I think we all can agree that noel should have never been the consensus number 1. I mean why? There truly were a number of players that could have been number one this year and all had huge question marks.

This is where Karl coming back to the organization could really help him. Thanks for the share.

I actually agree with your points too. Just it is a big concern for being a rotation player. Just pointing out why he was not picked earlier.
Less and less teams have low post scoring your are correct. BUT not the top playoff teams. Look at the Spurs, Grizzlies & Pacers. All had that option with multiple people being able to do that. Miami is the exception.

But I think you are correct about he is perfect for guarding against the slashing types unless they are really physical and they will just bump into him knock him far enough back and lay it up. But that would be rare just pointing that out. What is amazing is we have 3 players who are all good against guarding the pick and roll. So I am pretty happy. I like the pick. Just pointing out his flaws. No hate towards the pick.

Well, I guess his major weakness is that he has no offensive game beyond dunks.

Yeah, his offense is next to nothing. Actually, I take that back. He's pretty good at the P&R. I'm guessing he can't create his offense at all though, and doesn't have much of a jumper.

I still like the pick. He may bust big time, but the risk/reward ratio for the 28th pick or whatever is worth the roll of the dice IMO. He certainly has the physical tools to be an elite paint defender. Him and Favors could be an absolute nightmare matchup for opponents for interior scoring.

Radio guys keep talking about how he likes the game of basketball. He's the anti Ostertag, he wants to develop, to get better. They also say that he wasn't very well coached, and if everything we hear about Karl doing a good job coaching is true, this pick couldn't have happened at a better time.

His jumpshot is his workout videos looks decent too. His mechanics look pretty solid for a guy his size.
