What kind of player can Gobert be?

I think we all tend to think of young centers like him as potential Kareems or hakims if they can just work some on offense. I doubt that he can actually ever become of a force on offense or he would show more of that now.

So, what is a good analogy for what kind of center he could become? What are his assets?

1. Height and wingspan obviously.

2. Great quickness for his size.

3. A good motor, he seems to always be moving quickly and early, to set picks or to position for rebounds.

4. Shot blocking of course. But not all bigs his size are as good at it. Fesenko for instance played good d and clogged the lane well but was not much of a shot blocker.

The player are see Rudy being like is Joakim Noah: an "energy" big without much O. Noah is a starter and plays 34.9 mpg for one of the best teams (if healthy they would be right there, still good even without their star), and yet he is not relied on for O. I think that Rudy could fill that role right now. Let him play D, block shots, and get offensive boards and putbacks. Don't call plays for him or dump to him in the low block. And don't ask him to put on weight or you negate his quickness.

And pretty much all his "Ifs" come down to if he can put on body weight and become more hand-eye coordinated.

I'd be beyond shocked if he came anything close to Noah. Noah can score, is incredibly tough/strong, a good passer and can guard almost every position. Don't get me wrong I like Gobert a lot and think he can be a good defender, but he wont be the complete player like Noah

I think the intangible that sets Rudy apart from others is his attitude. Gobert seems to be a grouchy ******* with a chip on his shoulder. I like that. I like players who have attitude and take things personally.

As others have stated he runs the floor well, he has a penchant for being in the right place at the right time but he's still very raw. Under the right coach with a good amount of minutes he can be an above average player.

If he actually gets playing time I think he can be - at worst - an Joel Przybilla or Alexis Ajinca-type player.

I believe Gobert has the potential to block 2.5 a game. I'm much more excited about his rebounding and shot-blocking than his offense. I think he'll be one of those players who scores on offensive put-backs and high-percentage shots. When he's actually played 10+ minutes a game the results have often been good.

I would rather see Gobert playing than Kanter - Gobert would post similar rebound numbers and his defense would be better. As long as Gobert can keep out of foul trouble he'll be a force on the boards and defensive end.

Poor man's Shawn Bradley.

I doubt rudy will every pass like Noah does, but I think he blocks more shots. Noah does not score that much. Do they ever call plays for him? I mean, the offense is not really built around Noah, doesn't he get his points from hustle, put-backs etc, not set plays? Rudy can do that. I think in 3-4 years if Rudy played 30 mpg he would get 12 ppg that way, without having any particular offensive game. And he would be very valuable with his D.

Who cares.

What is Richard Jefferson's ceiling?! How far can he lead this young core next year?
What pieces can we get to build around him? Is Hayward enough?

Will not affect motor

More body weight negates his quickness and maybe his motor. some guys are better being skinny.

What we are talking about adding bulk and muscle, but maintaining good conditioning (so let's put aside the obvious fact that if he adds fat and is in poor condition, then motor and quickness will both be lost).

Adding muscle, there is no reason why motor should be affected. Think Moses Malone, Karl Malone, Nate Thurmond, Willis Reed, Wilt, early career Shaq, Bill Russell, Denis Rodman, Elvin Hayes.

I can see how quickness could be slightly affected since you have more mass to move around the floor, but given the other advantages, very much worth the tradeoff.

I don't see Gobert ever developing much of an offensive game...but could potentially be a great defender.
It'll suck to watch him tear it up in Atlanta next year.

Noah is much too versatile, skilled, and has a great all around game.

I like the Chandler comparison alot more. (a defensive specialist and little else)
All chandler does is play great defense. He is not a ball handler, not a really great rebounder, not a very good passer, etc etc.
chandlers highest pt average for his career is 11 pts. (his career average is 8.7)
chandlers highest rebound average is 12.4 which is very good but in his 13 year career he only averaged over 10 rebounds per game 3 times. (his career average is 9.1)

Gobert should just model his game after chandler. Block/altering shots and getting alley oops and rebounds plus some garbage putbacks on the offensive glass

We're really comparing Gobert to Noah and Chandler in this thread?

At some point in their careers, Noah and Chandler were top centers in the NBA. I should add that I think Noah currently is one of the top centers in the league…one of the top players overall.

I would be shocked if Gobert was anything close to those guys.

Fine.

I think gobert can maybe one day be as good as thabeet, sene, or fessenko.

Thats much more fun

Putting on too much muscle too fast can also be dangerous for a skinny big. Ankles shins and knees. Kareem was crazy skinny for his first five years or so. He's way young have patience.
