Authenticity? Every single Japanese anime character looks white. They aren't even authentic to their own race.
That's just an art style. Characters are culturally Japanese. They have Japanese names and act like Japanese.

This.
So Japanese artist draw their characters to look like Europeans, but SJW want to cry about American filmmakers not casting Japanese characters? Makes sense.
Well in the original anime the character was Motoko Kusanagi, she spoke Japanese and to me personally I've always associated her with a Japanese character (ala Goku in Dragonball, Naruto in Naruto, Ichio Kurosaki in Bleach, etc).
By casting Johansen (obviously within their right to do so), and still sticking with the Motoko Kusanagi name feels a bit odd to me. It would be like getting Brad Pitt to play Ichigo in a Bleach movie, or getting Eliahjah Wood to play Naruto.
It will still be something I look forward to, but I just think Hollywood missed an opportunity here to break the trend and go with a Japanese lead actress and be a bit more true/authentic to the original anime.
All those characters look white though.
Yeah but like Hekate said that's just the art style/rendering. Intrinsically we associated Ichigo and Naruto as Japanese, no?
Or do you think they're Europeans?
I think they are cartoon characters and people getting mad about a live-action interpretation of characters are being over dramatic.
