What's new

Wife might buy a 2017 Mini Clubman -- Talk me out of it, pls.

I disagree.

Yup, you're right. Both short-term and long-term reliability are way up overall over the last 30 years, even 10 years. Granted, a 2005 Toyota Tercel was reliable, but a 2005 Land Rover was not. Not the case today with any brand... they all have solid reliability. With all of the computers and technology on newer cars they might be much more costly to keep on the road for 50 years though compared to a 1970's model.

I don't like any crossover type vehicles.
My step mom has been over at our house looking at vehicles on our iPad (she doesn't have internet, a computer, a cell phone or anything) a lot lately cause she wants a new crossover. I think she is gonna get a Honda CR-V.

Crossovers are handy for their utility. AWD, space and ground clearance are important to a lot of people. Some of them drive extremely well, too. I still think a small hatchback is just about the perfect vehicle for most people though. Sedans suck. Americans are starting to get that. I mostly drive my SUV(and wagons before that). We own six vehicles but if I had to have one it would be my truck for sure.

I just miss my Nissan Xterra. Easily my favorite vehicle. It had the off road package which included upgraded Bilstein shocks, higher clearance, locking rear differential, full under body skid plates, roof lights, and a badass interior trim for the seats with leather steering wheel and leather gear shifter. Was so fun to drive, versatile, tough, comfortable and had just the right amount of frills (Rockford fosgate 6 disc changer, underseat subwoofer, overhead sunglasses compartment, radio and other control buttons on the steering wheel)
It was a 2010. Man I loved that thing. Couldn't pull a bigger trailer though so I traded it in for a Silverado. I want it back damn it

I loved the ease of laying the back seats down and even the front passenger seat folded up if you had something really long to haul. It had cargo hooks set in tracks so they were extremely adjustable for tie downs. Had cargo netting compartments. Great roof rack and roof cargo area for my wet waders and boots. Built in first aid kit. I could go on and on.
I didn't know I would miss it so much.

My son's best friend drives a 2010 Xterra. Great rig. Great engine. Does almost everything you'd want a vehicle to do. I rent a lot of 1/2 ton trucks these days so I've driven all of the 2019's and they are impressive. Can't beat a 1/2 ton truck for versatility and they drive great. I have a F-350 dually and it's amazing but would suck as a daily driver. 1/2 ton would be great and when I don't need to tow I'll probably go back to that and a sports car as my only rigs.

I personally only ever want a sedan. I think it's dumb they are going away.

We bought it. Well under KBB. @NOAS, I was liking it a little less and less as we drove it home. I hope my wife is happy, it's not a car I would want. It's hers. I have my car that is a car I've wanted and a car I really really like. You were talking about the Ford Focus, well, I've been a subaru guy ever since my family survived a pretty horrific roll over accident down a steep canyon slamming into a cement culvert and being partially submerged in water in a 2006 Forester XT. They all walked away. The "they lived" subaru commercials are exactly like the experiences we had in the wake of that accident, dealing with the towing company and wrecking yard. When we went to get our personal stuff they were very somber until we told them that no one was injured. They were sure we had lost people in the accident. We didn't. I know that in a number of other vehicles I would no longer have a family.

Since then I've owned a 2008 WRX and 2009 Legacy. The Legacy is what my wife has driven until today when she picked up the Mini Clubman. I currently drive a 2018 Subaru STI limited with the low profile trunk spoiler (aka, there isn't a spoiler). I've spent about 4k on cosmetic and performance mods since buying the car 5 months ago. Currently Cobb stage 2 for anyone who that means anything to. Eventually want to go stage 3+ with a custom tune and E85/flexfuel capability. My wife now has her dream car and I pretty much have mine (I'm sure we can both dream bigger, but for our budget it is what it is). Taste be damned.

Thanks for being so tease-able thru this process. I’ll probably switch over to quiet judgment now.

Was it the Clubman that sent you over the edge?

BTW that STI sounds evil.

I've never loved a car as much as my STI. I'll have to post some pics showing the cosmetic mods I've done.
