Each night we are learning more and more about who Enes Kanter can be as a player. Last night he showed the outside shooting touch for the first time. The night before it was the post defense on LaMarcus Aldridge that helped the Jazz to a hard fought win over the Blazers.

The play that stood out to me the post last night was when he got asked on one possession to curtail the drive of both Billiups and Mo Williams. He showed great athelticsm, he showed super basketball IQ and he played the system Tyrone Corbin wants perfectly.

The play starts with a pick and roll with Billups off Reggie Evans. The first part here is the intelligence of Kanter. Evans is a non offensive player so he plays back and doesn't worry about Evans. This is how playing teams a second and third time helps the younger players. Kanter hangs back as Billups comes off the pick and eliminates his driving lane.

At the correct moment Kanter stepped forward and blocks off the path of Billups forcing him to curl back out to the top and reset the play. He uses the sideline as a defender and leaves Billups no where to go. He also fully commits to Billups leaving Evans who is a non offensive player open but also trusting rotation.

Now the Clippers re-set the pick and roll on the other side with Mo Williams and Reggie Evans. Kanter shades to the correct side knowing the defense is going to push the pick and roll to the side rather than the middle.

Evans picks off Jamal Tinsley and it forces Kanter to guard Mo Williams drive. Kanter slides his feet and cuts off Williams. In addition, Kanter is aggressive enough the he continues to force Mo Williams laterally never allowing him to get a head of steam or head toward the rim.

Kanter completely cuts off Williams drive and prevents him from making in roads to the rim. By this time Tinsley is able to recover and Williams next move is an attempt to swirl back to the middle and he steps out of bounds. Turnover Clips and amazing defensive sequence by Enes Kanter. 19 and learning every play

Would advise clicking on the link, seeing as the actual article has pictures of Kanter in each step of that defensive possession, regarding what his positioning was like. Pretty cool stuff.

It is a nice post. And those who don't like Locke must not value this kind of analysis. He does it all the time folks. Locke is a good as it gets with local sports commentators.

Even though Knight is playing well right now, I still think we made the right pick. Kanter was obviously viewed as more of a project, but my god does this kid learn fast. He may even be ready to play starter's minutes before Favors is.

I agree. Some improvements happened incredibly quickly. Do you remember how long it took him to pass after a defensive rebound? Do you remember those hilarious fake passes/seizures? They're gone too. He's even getting up much faster on the offensive end, and he no longer dribbles a few times before getting blocked. I love Kanter.

Knew that was David Locke's writing as i read it. Admit i had to check and be sure. Locke is the only one in the world who could analyze every movement, thought and action of a specific player through a complicated possession involving nine other players. His voice/opinions aggravate the living crap out of me. I no longer have to listen at work on the radio, thank you Jayzuss! If they ever give him TV broadcasting duties the Jazz will become totally un-watchable. He treats Ron Boone like a challenged child who couldn't possibly have a valid opinion on the NBA. His arrogance knows no bounds.

I think Kanter needs to develop the Malone Knee when he goes up for a shot.
People will only get in the way of that "natural" knee movement once or twice.
That will also create enough space to shoot with that slow release without getting blocked.

Locke haters are 'tards.

Where was any "hate" in my post! Calling someone arrogant and annoying are not "hate". Yet when pure unreasoning hatred is posted here you are strangely silent.

I'm actually not saying anything about anyone in this thread. There are just a lot of people that hate Locke for some reason. That's all.

Awesome. Kanter had already been meeting my hopes for him this year, so clear signs of his aptitude on team defense puts me over the moon.

Kanter actually looks a bit quicker and more mobile out on the floor than Favors right now. It's possible that Favors is better suited to play center and use his length inside, while Kanter plays PF defensively.

That's how I'd call it.

Having only seen Kanter a few times, I find it hard to believe he could defend the pick and roll as slow as he seems to be and as quick as most guards are that run the pick and roll. He also seems to be somewhat uncoordinated as well.

Watch more.

He's not slow, it might appear that way to the naked eye because of his mass, but speed is not one of his shortcomings.

Then I guess it is a good thing Kanter is proving you wrong.
