What's new

You know, the draft is exciting...

But watching this years NBA playoffs, I have to wonder if maybe being the 8th seed wouldn't have been so bad...

Has Memphis really turned that corner and are that good?? Or are the Spurs an old, injured, and tired team who is just starting to wither down the stretch?? I think it's more the latter...

And what about Kobe and the Lakers?? Yeah, you could say that being tied 2-2 in a series with the Hornets is a mirage and the Lakers will pull it out... But even if Kobe is able to play on that ankle, how effective will he be?? What about Derrick Rose and his injuries in Chicago??

That leaves the Heat, Thunder, and Celtics as the only real teams right now that would be championship contenders in my mind right now...(The Mavericks are pretenders and they always will be)

Funny thing is, we were just like the Grizzlies down the stretch, and we started to put it together like they did...

This is why you want to make it to the playoffs, because a couple of big injuries can make a big difference from your team not having a chance and going all the way...

I think its way premature to count out the Lakers and Bulls even with the injuries. Dallas should have won their series 4-1, but yeah dont think they are championship material unless they can rewind the clock 10 years for Kidd. Memphis is looking brilliant for tanking their last 3 games or so to play San Antonio.

What? We went 3-10 in our last 13 and they went 19-11 in there last 30. Remember the Kings game? The Wizards game? Memphis has been looking really good for awhile now. We would have lost to the spurs in 5.

Also keep in mind Memphis tanked like the last 3 games or so.

Yeah gutsy move by Hollins.

One that's turned out to be genius. Not only are they on the verge of knocking out the four time champion number one seed, but they matched up excellently against OKC this season. For all those saying that the Thunder are going to have a playoff run like the Jazz from a few years ago because they could have the luxury of playing the 8 seed in the second round, look a little closer. Memphis went 3-1 against them this year and lost by a point in their one loss. Not to mention they're doing this all without Gay. Can you imagine the Memphis Grizzlies in the WCF? Not saying it's going to happen, but the Thunder will have their hands full if Memphis advances.

In relation to the Jazz...even had we snuck in or held onto a playoff spot, would we be doing this against the Spurs. Vets/winners feast on teams in our situation, trying to "recover" from not just one, but two identity changing transactions in the middle of the season. The difference is that Memphis is not only unafraid of playing the Spurs, but look forward to it. They see the throat and they're ready to strike.

Yeah, Memphis/San Antonio basically had identical records in their last 30 games. San Antonio clearly fading from their shockingly good start while Memphis quietly was pulling it together - even after Rudy Gay went down. I thought San Antonio would kick it up a notch once they got Manu back but that hasn't been the case, and Hollins had the foresight to see that.

If you gave me the choice between a.) picks #6 and #12 vs. b.) picks #6, #19 and a first-round playoff loss, I'd take option b - especially with Harrison Barnes' withdrawal. Oh well, May 17th will get here soon enough.

I agree with you. I would MUCH rather be in the playoffs no matter what draft pick we get, but the only reason we get to keep our #12 pick this year is because that pick is lotto protected.

We would only get the #6 pick if we got into the playoffs. Our pick would have been traded to the Grizz...or Minnesota...can't remember which.... either way, I'm just sayin'.

Yeah but since we didn't make the playoffs this year, our pick might be headed over to the TWolves next year if we make the playoffs.

Personally, I would rather have our guys get at least 4 playoff games experience and lets say the 16th pick next year in a draft that gets stronger and stronger than the 12th pick in this supposedly weaker draft. As of now, the 12th this year and 16th next year have the same value in my opinion.

vslice2

Option (b) wasn't available. If we had made the playoffs and earned the 19 pick we owed that to Minnesota. Regardless, the spurs have owned the jazz. For whatever reason we cannot guard the three point shot and we have real trouble with quick penetrating point guards. So had we made the playoffs, I believe we would have been out in the first round and only had the sixth pick in the draft.

This is all candy and dreams anyway since we didn't make the playoffs. The only option now is to try to make the 6 and 12 pick worth it.

Memphis is flat-out better than Utah right now. Don't be a Jazz homer and fall into the trap of thinking Utah would actually have the Spurs on the ropes right now because they wouldn't. With that being said, I do think Utah's future is brighter than Memphis'.

Utah can have a brighter future. It really just depends on this summer. With who we draft, sign, and what assets we get for Bell and Memo. Memphis has a good starting 5 and a deep bench. And there just continue to get better. And hasn't that Memphis vs Spurs series has been the funnest one to watch? I just love watching the Spurs lose!!

It goes to Minnesota and chawx is absolutely correct. I only included that pick in my scenario because if we made the playoffs - we'd be 100% assured of having our 2012 1st-round pick - and regardless of the playoffs or anything else - I'd much rather give the Timberwolves our 1st-round pick from this year's draft as opposed to next year, or any other year for that matter. Oh well, none of that matters now.
