With that quick release, there is no defense on Russell, you just have to hope the shot isn't falling. As a freshman, especially the last 10 or so games of the season, that happened enough. As he gets older, the shot should become more consistent and at that point defenses are effed. And of course the great thing about Russell is that even in the shot isn't going in, he does other things to help his team.

The first pass and last pass shown in that youtube clip are just sick. He had a pass in the first half of the Arizona game to Thompson that wasn't converted for points - so not on any highlight video - that was one of the best I've seen. The feel for the game and vision he has as just a freshman are unreal.

At this point I'd be fine with any of the top 12ish guys other than Turner and Looney. Turner seems like too big of a project for me and I don't like what I've seen from Looney.

I think you're mostly right that he won't be as good as either. It's hard to predict any young player will be that good. However, in regard to the Curry comp, while I agree that he's not as quick, it's worth mentioning he is significantly bigger.

He is significantly bigger - and he uses his size well. And compared to Curry/Harden, I would argue that he is every bit as good/productive, if not moreso, than those guys were as true freshmen.

Steph Curry and James Harden are two of the top 4 players in the NBA this season, so if Russell doesn't hit those heights, he's not exactly a bust. But I wouldn't put it past him to have MVP-caliber seasons. I think his athleticism may be slightly underrated and he'll be able to get his shot off in the league.

Plus, his swagger is once-in-a-decade.
