Players Off Season Development, Your Take

The funniest thing about this thread is those who think it is possible to gain 15 pounds of muscle in 5 months. Experts put the maximum amount of muscle a highly trained individual can gain (defined as someone who's been working out for 5 years or more) at 0.5% of their body weight per month. So the very best he can do is about 6 pounds of muscle in the off-season. We're only talking about muscles here, of course. Most people gain non-muscle weight when they build muscles as well.

Rudy is a little bigger than most human beings though, and that means he's capable of putting on more muscle weight than the average person. However, even though I'd like to see him get stronger, I don't want to see him put on a bunch of weight just so he can bang with the bruisers of the league. Rudy is a rare case of size/length/athleticism, and trying to turn him into a banger could affect the part of his game that is already elite, or increase the risk of injury.

It's a percentage, not a sum. What difference does his size make? I agree with the rest. Like I said in my followup post, i'll leave it to the trainers to evaluate whether putting on weight would help his game or not.

You said 6 pounds as if that applies to everyone.

No. I said 0.5% of body weight. He weighs 230 lbs, which comes to 6 pounds of muscle.

What difference does his size make?

Body weight =/= muscle mass. In other words, suppose you have a guy who is 5 foot 4 and weighs 230 with average muscle. Does that mean that he and Rudy would both build the same amount of muscle based on a %? Assuming Rudy's overall muscle mass is greater than short, fat guy, and they both build muscle at the same rate, Rudy is going to gain more muscle because he has more muscle growing at the same rate.

Good thread.

For our main players (Gobert, Favors, Hayward, Hood, Burks, Burke and Exum) what do you want them focusing on this off season? What should the coaches tell them?

Gobert: Hand strength, core/leg weight gain of about 10-15lbs, that hook and a J out to the FT line
Hand/arm strength and catching and securing the ball in traffic/finishing through contact, lower body strength... go-to offensive move might be good too...

Favors: mid-range game, passing drills, aggression
If he's going to play post-ups he needs to work on that. I feel like with him moving to his more natural position at the 4 he can lose some weight in favor of more speed and agility.

Hayward: handles (TOs), shooting drills to reduce up and down games scoring wise
For me it was weird that even with the all the muscle he gained he almost never posted up. He should try it and work on it. To me he looks really crafty and can possibly exploit some matchups.

Hood: how to pull up from a drive before you run over the defender, 3s
I know what you mean. Defenders were taking charges against him constantly in the beginning of the season. I actually think he's been really successful at sidestepping them and using eurosteps to avoid them after he returned from his injury. I'd like to see him gain more strength and in work on his general fitness. I don't know what his problems with the gastric distress are, some people have suggested he has anxiety problems. If that's so, the Jazz might be wise to look into getting him help.

Burks: continue rehabing, 3s and pull up Js
Decision-making and 3p shooting. Defensive improvements - closelouts, screen navigation, team defense. I want to see him take the wide-open 3s. I don't want to see him hesitating, I don't want to see him dribbling before he makes a decision about what to do(and in most cases driving). If he's open for a 3, I'd love to just see him shoot it. I don't know if anyone would dare suggest that to him, since he's already shooting above average for the league from 3, but ideally I'd like for him to fix his shooting mechanics. That leg kick he does on his shot is ugly as **** and needs to go. It's really bad for him being on balance when shooting.

Burke: continue working on that floater, 3s, shooting!!!!
Shooting.

Exum: shooting!, aggression. conditioning, strength and weight gain
HANDLE!!! HANDLE!!! HANDLE!!! Conditioning and strength. I actually don't feel like he needs to gain much if any weight.
He plays short in the lane. That needs to stop. He's one of the longest players on his position and he fears to play his size. He needs to take a look at his old games with Australia U19, hoop summit, etc. Needs to work on his touch around the basket as well. Needs to work on physicality! I don't want to see him avoiding contact at all cost next year.

Team: Free Throws!!!!!!!! be at P3 as a group for at least three straight weeks

Agree.

Exum should just spend as much time as he can playing one on one with Rudy at the rim. He'll be happy to attack the rim against anyone else after a summer of that.

OH good lord Freakazoid. Must you take the most simplistic posts, blow them out of proportion and respond with a response that requires a response much more difficult than the question that was asked in the original post that you were responding to in attempt to gain response to create argument just for the sake of you having the satisfaction that you were the only one that didn't have the mental capacity to take a simplistic statement, complicate it, and respond with senseless responses responding to questions that could be responded to by otherwise simple, intellectual corresponding Jazz Fanz community with the capability to correspond with courtesy during their correspondence unlike your pretentious, ridiculing, self every single time?? Somebody get this guy a box of animal crackers so that he stops thinking for a brief minute. Every time he posts, he doesn't post any ideas of his own, he just nit pics the ideas of everyone else, like a 65 year old nagging house wife, who loves her 15 cats more than her 6 children who she breast fed all the way until their teenage years. Its as if Rush Limbaugh and Orin Hatch reproduced and had a 65 year old nagging housewife son with a screen name of Freakazoid. (Oh my lord I finally figured out why you have the name you have)

I don't post my own ideas? I contribute infinitely more to this board than the trash you spread around, so STFU and know your place, you ****ing nimrod.

Agree.

Having Exum increase his muscle mass will increase his strength which will help him in finishing at the rim with contact. I like the handles work as well, good addition.

Especially since the Jazz have a guy who can do that better than Rudy can already in Derrick Favors. Why mess with what's working? Rudy's length and athleticism is unique. If he can add a little muscle to that, great. Otherwise, his emphasis should be improving his explosiveness and flexibility for injury prevention. Injury is the ONLY thing that I can see slowing Rudy down.

I see Exum making a big leap, personally. The kid just needs a little swagger. He's so talented. If he does, we win 50 games.

I said a highly trained individual. A 230 lbs fatass can gain a lot more muscle than Rudy due to being unconditioned. I got my numbers from International Sports Sciences Association's Fitness Guide. Either way, first you argued that I was wrong to say that the maximum for everyone is 6 pounds, then you changed the argument into how I was wrong to use body weight instead of muscle mass. I'm sure you'll come up with something else now, since this is about your refusal to accept that you can make mistakes. In that case, please enjoy having the last word.

Aside from the nuance of the exact number is it agreed that we want Gobert to gain some weight/muscle in his legs and core?

Rudy has got to learn to dunk from the FT line in traffic. Just has to, no ifs ands or butts about it.

He could take a prohormone over the off-season, and by the time the preseason hits he'll have it flushed from his system.

Burks needs to mentally prep himself for the fact that this new version of the team (since his injury) is 1000% diff from the first of the year and the Corbin days. So defense will matter more than anything he will need to improve offensively. The end.

Quite honestly, I thought we were having a discussion here, but this subject really doesn't matter that much to me, so I'm sorry for nit picking. 6 pounds it is.

Post-Kanter, our win % put us on course for that. Assuming Exum makes some improvement overall next season (no reason not to think so), we're contenders.

Honestly, I don't care if he gains weight or not. He is already a baddass at his current size.

I just want to see him gain more skills tbh
