Ingles at point guard (in lieu of Garrett Temple)?

I'll admit I don't know much about Temple other than he's a 6'6" SG who is defensive-minded and can apparently play a little PG. His shooting numbers (from the field and from deep) are underwhelming, all the way back through college. Despite that, I see some sense in trying to keep some of the momentum going from the end of last season by inserting someone in the lineup who's big, defensive-minded and won't be dominating the ball in any regard. As I've thought about it, I've wondered if Ingles could fill this role. The only question is how he'd hold up having to guard some of the smaller, quicker players. I'm not certain how he compares to Temple there. In any case, I think he's got a three point shot that is at least reliable enough to add something to the offense and, being 6'8", would make this a difficult cover as the opposing teams' PGs would have to guard Hayward, Hood or Ingles and he'd have a bit more height to shoot over 6'2" guys. I'm not certain how much that would add to the offense to balance out any defensive quickness lost, but having a back court that's 6'8" creates other mismatches on defense that, at least to a certain degree, negates some of the loss of quickness and speed.

Would this be worthy of consideration? I think keeping the ball in the hands of other players would continue to let the offense flow as opposed to inserting a more ball-dominant PG (not mentioning any names).

Temple is a much better defender at the PG position. Ingles can't guard pgs and he doesn't even handle at a pg level.

Let's just put Gobert at PG. He's already shown he can come out and block 3PT shots. And at his size, all he has to do is hold the ball above his head until a teammate gets open. PG's will be jumping up trying to get the ball and he can just stretch a little higher and tease them. It's like playing keep-away when your kids are young. Nothing they can do short of tackling you (or kicking you in the groin) to get the ball.

Pretty much this. Ingles can take spot minutes or given plays at the point, like a mini-Hayward kind of thing. No way can he do it for even big chunks of games. But the fact that he gives us another ball handler and play maker in the mold of Hayward is a good thing. I am an Ingles fan, just not as our FT or even PT point guard.

Quin Snyder said as long as they can play defense then he doesn't care about positions in offense. They are interchangeable on offense.

BUT Ingles can't guard point guards

If Burks and Hayward are on the floor with him, maybe. He could defend the 2 or 3, depending on the opponent, while Burks defended the pg and Hayward the other wing.

But with Burks, Hayward and Ingles together every one of them could take the point. This takes Snyder's "no positions" idea to it's extreme. 3 PGs on the floor at once who can all defend different positions.

Burke can't defend one position let alone two.

I think op was trolling

I think Ingles can initiate offense and facilitate, but guarding other point guards would be an issue.

I think the Temple interest is basically like this... Dante played good defense, but didn't create much offense and mostly spotted up in the corner and hit at an okay rate... we did that last year and were fine... Who else could do that or maybe a better version of that? Garrett Temple might be available.

Burke's over dribbling is disruptive to what we want to do... especially with the starters. If he just became a ball mover, spotted up, and drove on an as needed basis he'd be better off. We can facilitate/create with Hayward, Hood, Burks, and Ingles. If Temple is a good defender and can dribble the ball up the court as well as hit from outside he could be decent.

No, the worst thought ever is a season of Trey playing 35 mins a night and watching what that does to the teams flow.

Bumping this again in light of Jingles-mania. A thread three years ahead of its time.
