San Francisco's last gun shop to close as supervisors pass gun control measure

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) --
San Francisco's Board of Supervisors has unanimously passed a new gun control measure. And the belief it would pass is one reason the city's only gun store is closing.

The sponsor of the ordinance says Congress has failed to act, so the city needs to step up. It is tighter and tighter regulations like his that has convinced San Francisco's last gun shop to hang it up.

A few accessories and even fewer firearms are all that's left at High Bridge Arms, the one and only gun store in San Francisco is closing after more than six decades.

"All the bad guys can still get theirs," said gun store customer Steven Walker. "Now it's just making it harder for law abiding citizens to come in and protect them and their families here in the city."

The store's general manager says there are a variety of reasons for closing, including the owner's decision to retire. But in his words, the straw that broke the camel's back was when they got word of the legislation proposed by San Francisco Supervisor Mark Farrell.

"First it mandates the videotaping of all gun sales here in San Francisco," he said. "And second of all, mandates the electronic transmission of ammunition sales data directly to our police department."

His legislation passed unanimously at city hall.

"I think they need to address more along the lines of the illegal activities being done in the street and to address violence in general, not just with guns," said High Bridge Arms General Manager Steven Alcairo.

Farrell says other cities already have laws with similar requirements for firearms and ammunition sales. And even though this is San Francisco's only store and it's now going out of business, Farrell says the new law will be in place should anyone else try to set up shop.

"I do believe the city of San Francisco will be safer because of it and better off for it," he said.

Hundreds of t-shirts have been sold at High Bridge Arms, noting the end of an era. The last gun store closes at the end of the week.

all this "gun control talk from the left is about driving gun shops out of business.
they just succed in san francisco. they wanna spread this disease to the whole country

yeah yeah yeah I KNOW. this is not a gun ban.
but what if all gun shops and manufactures close.
coupled with confiscating and buy back programs that is a GUN BAN.

this is just a move on the chessboard.
one move that will lead to total gunban

We're talking about San Francisco here. This is a non-story.

You do realize it's inevitable. It won't happen overnight, but if small steps like this continue to happen then it will only be a matter of time.

So state level regulations (and their subdivisions) are new?

So state level regulations (and their subdivisions) are new?

Where did I say that exactly? Small steps are taken every day to erode gun rights. It's not new. It's much higher profile now because of the NRA and other gun advocates ramping up their propaganda. Do I believe the ultimate goal of government, as currently constituted, is to disarm as many people as possible? Yes, I do. People are far more subservient without a perceived power not to be controlled. The sad reality is that even if the second amendment isn't altered, or otherwise changed, citizens won't have the firepower of organization to "overthrow" the government.

I don't think there is some kind of secret movement to slowly erode gun rights. States have regulated gun sales and ownership since forever. I also don't know who the "government" is in your statement. Clearly many people in the government are opposed to gun regulations. And citizens in a liberal democracy shouldn't have the power to violently overthrow their government. And outside of the US, nobody thinks they should.

Baby steps to sanity. Hope more to follow.

more baby steps in one Chicago area suburb - the suburb was one of three named in a lawsuit because of the disproportionately large number straw purchases that seem to take place at gun shops in these communities - more than 20% of guns recovered in crimes in the city were traced back to three shops, including one in Lyons, Illinois - the community that enacted the regulations described below

Lyons, Illinois – Village Mayor Christopher Getty today announced that the village has approved an ordinance that spells out procedures to help crackdown on the sale of guns to “straw purchasers.”

“The new ordinance approved today spells out a strategy to help prevent straw buyers from purchasing guns that end up in the hands of criminals,” Getty said...

...Effective immediately, the gun shop will have to keep electronic records of anyone who purchases more than one firearm within a 12-month period. All records and documents, including completed forms, must be turned over to local law enforcement within 48 hours if the gun shop dealer determines that the potential buyer is not a "valid or lawful" purchaser.

In addition, the law requires the shop to maintain a digital "do not sell" list of people who purchased a gun that was later traced to a crime. Each gun shop employee must hold a valid firearms owner's identification card. And the shop must audit all inventory and report any loss or discrepancy to the village within 48 hours of discovery....

4 Gun Shops Responsible for Selling Guns Recovered at 20% of Chicago Crime Scenes

A study by the city of Chicago on gun use found that a fifth of the guns recovered from that city’s crime scenes came from one of four stores in nearby suburbs. Now a suit has been filed against three of those cities in the hopes they’ll tighten their gun sales laws.

The report (pdf) found that Chuck’s Gun Shop and Pistol Range, in Riverdale, Illinois, sold 1,516 of the guns recovered from 2009 to 2013. That’s nearly one for each of the days covered in the survey. Midwest Guns of Lyons, Illinois, sold 659, Westforth Sports of Gary, Indiana, sold 515, and Shore Galleries of Lincolnwood, Illinois, sold 483.

Activists are suing the Illinois stores. “This is a civil rights lawsuit to stop the export of guns from the suburbs into Chicago’s African-American neighborhoods,” one of the group’s attorneys, Michael Persoon, told the Chicago Tribune.,,,

In an attempt to stem the tide of illegal guns flowing into Chicago, southwest suburban Lyons has passed an ordinance requiring its sole gun shop to follow an extensive list of rules to prevent trafficking and stop straw buyers, according to the Tribune.

Lyons' lone gun store, Midwest Sporting Goods, has been open for more than 50 years, and weapons purchased there have been flowing into the city at a disproportionate rate, according to a lawsuit filed by anti-gun activists in July.

The shop will now have to keep a "do not sell" list of customers whose purchased weapons have been traced to a crime and report the names of anyone who tries to purchase a gun illegally. It's a long set of rules and failure to comply could result in fine, suspension or revocation of the business license, which the Tribune has detailed on its site.

As a result of the ordinance, the village will be dropped from the lawsuit filed by the Coalition for Safe Chicago Communities, which claimed that many guns recovered at crime scenes in Chicago were purchased in Lyons, Riverdale or Lincolnwood. Those other two suburbs were not part of the settlement and the lawsuit against them is ongoing.

The gun shop said it is happy to comply with the new rules. The National Rifle Association helped advise the gun store as the village drew up the ordinance, village attorney Burton Odelson told the Tribune. But the Illinois State Rifle Association is opposed to the list especially the "do not sell" list.

now here's one for the "I told you so" crowd...

A robbery was thwarted at a Southwest Side corner store Saturday night when a patron with a concealed carry license shot and killed an armed robber, authorities said.

The dead man has been identified as Reginald Gildersleeve, 55, of the 5000 block of South California Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Gildersleeve was pronounced dead on the scene at 7:10 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office. An autopsy is slated for Sunday.

Citing preliminary information, police said a man walked into a store around 7 p.m. in the 2700 block of West 51st Street in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side, announced a robbery to an employee working behind the counter and displayed a handgun.

Another employee came from the back of the store and the gunman pointed his weapon at her, police said. He then made her go to the back of the store, which also serves as a currency exchange.

After that, a customer who was also inside the business pulled out a gun and opened fire at the robber, killing him, police said. Police initially said the robber was possibly in his 40s.

Police said the shooter has a valid concealed carry license and a valid firearm owner's identification card.

So I say good for the customer with the concealed carry permit that he had all the proper permits and that nobody else was injured. Too bad for the would-be armed robber, but he took his chances and lost.

However, nothing about this story contradicts the need for stricter regulations in general.

I'm cool with gun control.
All the people that actually know how to use them will have them anyway.

Let me ask you, teach, do you believe in protection?

Uh oh, that sounded like an insult.

Do I believe in protection? About what type we talkin'?
