What's new

GT: Kings @ Jazz. 7 MST.

I just want to say, I think the "playoff experience" thing is just not true if you are a mediocre team squeaking in and promptly swept. 8th seed in West last year --- New Orleans. How did all that "playoff experience" go for them this year? What about Milwaukee Bucks, a 41-41 6th seed? Terrible this year, with a young core.

Our team ain't a playoff team. Do we play any games this year where you think "I'm pretty sure we will win this game"? Well, maybe tonight (which we lost). I don't think we'll be favored in any upcoming games other than the Lakers. The team sucks, I'm not happy with it. It's mostly injuries. But i'm getting ready to throw in the towel and be zen about it.

I'm super down to make the playoffs, but as a team that earns it. As a 39 win 8th seed that only makes it because we were only slightly less bad than the Kings and Blazers were? No thanks. I'll take a 10th overall pick in that case. ****ing frustrated.

Bingo. If we finish with a losing record (likely) and backdoor our way into the playoffs because of how bad the lower half of the west is, well, I'd rather take the 10th pick than the 15th pick + 4 blowout losses to GS

Oh yeah, that psychological effect is really helping out the Pelicans this year isn't it.

Why do you keep implying getting your *** swept in the first round by the Warriors levels you up?

Because not making the playoffs to making them is a significant jump don't you think? Now if we made the playoffs (say an 8th seed) and didn't find a way to improve the following season then that would be frustrating. You always have to aim for the playoffs if you have a shot. You either tank properly or you're all in for the win. I rather not make the playoffs was a very empty comment if you ask me.

Again this leads us back to the failed draft system, where the 'middle class' of the season is penalized and the tankers are favored. Socialists.

Dude, post of the year.

Exactly how I feel, I'd take the 10th pick any day. This team isn't ready for the next step, our team needs a real or semi-real star player which for a moment I thought Rudy can grow into but this season he is showing me that he is at most like a DeAndre type player.

The truth is, we're playing with fringe NBA talent across the board. Booker, the wings, and especially at PG. In a PG driven league it's imperative that we get a star/superstar at that position. We have a guy starting for us who should be a 3rd string or in the D-League. It shows.

Making the playoffs isn't a significant jump at all if you go from 38 wins one year to 35 or 36 the next. It's a completely artificial jump. A bandaid for the fans, really.

And I fail to see what's empty about wanting the 10th pick over the 15th pick and 4 blowout losses to the Warriors.

Firstly, a 5 spot differential in the draft is overrated. Secondly, it implies rooting for losses, what kind of system encourages this aberration in sports. And finally, as a player it would show that the team and system that I'm playing for has effectively improved. I just don't get that approach what can I say.

May I say a 5 spot differential in that zone in the draft board, before you go on to say something like 'oh you think the number 1 pick isn't better than the 6th?'. Let's be realistic here.

only if we had favors exum and burks... we should be at 5th seed right now. maybe even higher.

I think we can have a good record after all star break... if favors and burks come back

Making the playoffs with 30 something wins a year after missing it with 30 something wins doesn't show improvement at all. It shows the West has regressed.

People are only going to see that we made the playoffs this season, not how me made them. Next to not even making them. So what if we don't get a 5th seed or home court advantage it's not worth it? Where do you draw your line?

I think the 8th, 7th, 6th and 5th seeds should also have a shot in the lottery. The 4 teams with home court advantage are already in a very exciting position heading towards the playoffs. I don't know something needs to change. This system sucks.

Just like how Boston or the Nets are super respected for making the playoffs.

Hence why I said making the playoffs is only a bandaid for the fans.

Look, this is all a lot easier to understand if you stop pretending that making the playoffs levels you up.

I have more respect for Boston than for Philly. The Nets are in the 76ers' league as for mismanagement. The 2 extremes of how to mismanage a roster, overtanking or overspending.

You probably wouldn't have respected the '05-06 Jazz either.

They missed the playoffs, and despite missing the Jamezz respect level up, they somehow managed to improve and become a legit playoff contender the following season.

If we have a winning record and get into the playoffs, Ill be happy.

If we have a losing record and make the playoffs, that would suck.

Wouldnt feel earned or like the team gained much, plus we would lose out what would probably be a top 10 draft pick.

It's a genuine thought I'm not pretending anything, especially if we're gonna stick to this roster like it seems we're doing. Either that or start spending. Again do we want to start looking up and maybe start using our assets or do we blow it all up again and play the failed system. I wouldn't want to be in DL's shoes at this moment.

Who gives a **** if you're considered a scrub team or an irrelevant marginal team?! I still hope that Exum works out, and the team meshes into something special when everyone is healthy. But as it stands, making the playoffs makes no difference whatsoever to the future of the team. In fact, I'll take 5 better spots in the lottery ten out of ten times, over making the playoffs with 35 wins to get embarrassed.

Well we just have different views on this subject. You think that 5 spots in the lottery has a more positive effect towards where we could finish at the end of the following season than the psychological effects of making the playoffs. Stalemate.

would you rather a better lottery pick than say scraping into the playoffs but being reasonably competitive while getting swept, or maybe sneaking one win ?

Scraping into the playoffs would give us nothing. We'd be out of the lottery, and "playoffs experience" is only meaningful when you have the building blocks for a contending team that just needs that little shove to push it to the next level. The Jazz, even when healthy, showed little improvement from last season. Exum will help, and so will an improved Lyles. But unless we are good enough to make use of that experience (and we're not), I'll take a top 10 pick with a chance at the top 3. Easily.
