Trey wasnt Ty's pick. You really can't believe DL deferred to a coach he didnt even want to re-sign.
DL made it clear in an interview after the draft that Ty pushed hard for Burke. He wouldn't need to say that if the pick was entirely his.

Not saying Burks isn't a good player but let's be real, you have to think about flexibility as well.
I didn't say Burks is worse, but for a small market team like the Jazz a draft pick is a lot more important than keeping an overpriced fringe starter. Not saying Burks isn't a good player but let's be real, you have to think about flexibility as well.
Would you say Burks is better than Hood? No right? Hood is a late first rounder in an average draft. So is Gobert. I know we won't be hitting the jackpot every time, but with DL's drafting track record (barring Trey who was really a Ty's pick), I'd roll the dice with him getting us another solid player who we can have on cheap contract for years to come.
Utah didn't "find" Gobert. He was a top-ten pick on the world's best and most popular free draft database for large portions of the preceding months. He should've gone in the teens. When I heard the Jazz got him at #27, I was stunned. The entire NBA fell asleep at the wheel and the Jazz pounced.I call BS. The buck stops at the GM's desk. He makes the final call; if he takes credit for Hood, he can't pass off a terrible mistake on a coach, It's laughable to assume Corbin as a new coach had Sloan-like power to demand a certain player. Also, DL pigeon-holed himself into HAVING to take a PG instead of BPA by not resolving the PG situation the season before. He had the worst backup PG's in the league and knew Mo wasn't coming back.
I think we give him WAY too much credit for being a draft "guru." Yes, I give him and his staff kudos for Gobert. Can't remember the int'l guy they hired, but I do remember he was the one who used to put together the World team for the Hoop Summit, He was the one who "found" Gobert and it was a very smart hire, Hood was a "no-brainer" pick as the highest rated player on the board. During the draft, his name kept popping up. 99% of us would have made the pick, But what hidden "gems" has DL found? With his 90 workouts per summer has he uncovered a Paul Millsap or a Wesley Matthews with one of those late picks?
2013 - Traded up for Neto. 3rd-string PG on almost any other team. OK, at least he made a roster.
2014 - Draft pick traded for a future, WORSE pick (Jokic or Clarkson would have been nice!)
2015 - Hanlan drafted, other pick sold for cash. Nothing exciting here.
OK, any FA moves of note? KOC brought in Memo and Okur. DL has found us Booker, Withey, Johnson and Little Sap. WOW, I bow to genius. Oh that's right...the slew of player development guys Utah has will turn scrubs into all-stars!

Sure, but he also traded a pick that could've been Gobert and another pick that could've (and reasonably may have) been Schroeder (or Giannis), all for a guy that we're all so relieved has gone from mostly dog-**** to serviceable/mediocre.Let's say Gobert was a "sure thing" pick.... DL was still the only GM out of 29 who essentially stole the pick from DEN for a song.
There is always the argument of "that player probably wouldn't have done as well with that franchise, who knows maybe he could have been a star with this franchise."

*jerk off motion*
By the way, Sloan got a lot of credit for singling out Gobert. He likes to give credit, he's a nice ****ing guy, but he was in charge.

Yeah, that would have been amazing, but I think I remember Locke or one of the beat writers saying Gobert would have been the pick at 14. Which makes sense.Sure, but he also traded a pick that could've been Gobert and another pick that could've (and reasonably may have) been Schroeder (or Giannis...
I don't know what went on in the war room that day. But this we know:
- DL was just recently made GM
- Ty was the coach who was hired by KOC and Greg and his job was secure
- KOC was still very much involved in the decision making even though DL was the GM in name
- DL credited Ty for the Burke pick and said Ty "pushed hard for him".
My take is DL didn't want to step on Ty and KOC's toes when making his first big decision and dealt for the pick that got us Burke primarily on Ty's recommendations.
Who did DL credit with the Gobert pick? No one. That was his pick.

By the way, Sloan got a lot of credit for singling out Gobert. Lindsey likes to give credit, he's a nice ****ing guy. Don't read into it too much, neither ownership nor the FO was in Ty's pocket.
In the past for jazz draft picks it was always a collaboration when it came to picks. Jerry Sloan had an influence, koc/scott layden had an influence, Larry h Miller had an influence, and a few others as well.LMAO if you actually believe this. He picked Burke. It's his fault. By saying "Ty pushed hard for him" is just taking pressure off himself if the fails. DL is the GM. GM's have the final say in drafting.

Idk if it is still that way but there is a chance that DL liked trey a little and maybe liked someone else a little more but the coaches, owner, and other jazz management felt strongly that the jazz should pick trey burke if they could and DL went along with.
When it comes down to it DL's name gets stamped on every pick, trade, free agent pickup that occurs but that does not mean that he always goes with what he thinks is the best thing to do. There are probably times when he thinks plan A and plan B are both good plans but he favors plan A a little more than plan B yet still goes with plan B due to the influence of others involved in the decision making process.
The jazz are run like a democracy where everyone has a voice. It's not a monarchy like some other franchises
