Henry struggles to steady his aim, until finally it calms... because he’s thought of something else. His arm drops to his side.

"There’s a seventy dollar bonus from the Rocky Mountain Fur Company to the two men that stay with the Jazz... see this through."

What does 'we were capable of the fifth seed' mean in this context?

Well, were in a position to actually get the 5th seed when Stifle and I started talking about this. I feel we had the talent to do so. It's not that the Jazz were not good enough to get the 5th seed, it's that we failed to play up to their talent.

Why is this thread stickied?

I say the tank thread should be stickied. We aren't making the playoffs. And even if we did, who the hell wants to watch the massacre against the Warriors/Spurs?

And that's where we differ. Jazz have the worst PG trio in the league. They only have 3 guys capable of scoring: Hayward, Hood and Favors. Jazz also have one of the worst benches in the league, The winning streak came against weak teams and during a home heavy schedule (5H, 2A). Several of those wins were by just a few points. That's why I was so harsh in my assesment: castles in the sand, if you will. I saw the tide rolling in (i.e. a harder schedule with more road games). And Jazz up to that point had been abysmal away from home.

Due to injury

Burks and Burke

When healthy Burks and burke were in the top of bench ppg. I agree that people like Ingles need to be 3rd stringers and Johnson probably not on the team.

And several of our losses come against great teams by a few points on the road, often when injured.

You were harsh. Overly harsh IMO. This team has lost a ton of games due to injury and that ruined our average bench depth.

I do hope that DL gets his butt into gear this off season and improves the bench. Back up SF, SG and PG would be positions I'd look at. And look long and heavy at trading 1-2 current players for something more beneficial to the team. Like a SG or PG that can hit the three.

But mainly I am only tweaking your nose a little. Enjoy the season. I am.

IDK about that. We said 5th seed was possible because a lot of people here thought Memphis would heavily struggle without Gasol, which they haven't to this point.

Agreeing with you at the time we all thought it was possible and for good reason, but now the reason isn't just that we aren't playing to our potential, but the competition is greater than expected.

I think the Jazz finish 11-7 for the rest of the games. That puts us at 40-42 and missing the playoffs by 1 game. But I am hoping they get on a streak and win an extra 2 games and get to .500. I think .500 makes the playoffs this year.

Frankly it is amazing we have this record with the amount of injuries we have had, the youth of this team and the lack of depth. Look at the roster of Dallas they have so many more veterans and so much more depth compared to the Jazz. Lindsey put this season on the Core without help from vets. This allowed the team to grow and try and work hard and make the playoffs. But hedged his bet with not adding much to the team so that if they struggled a bit we could get a lotto pick and know better what we have and what moves we need to make to be a contender in the future. Its hard to gauge a team when you start making a push to win as much as you can with young stars. I really like what Lindsey did and think it was a smart decision. He was hoping to see if we were the next Thunder and some players would become stars. None of our players did, they are a group of borderline all-stars and an unknown in Exum (although his floor is a solid starter in the NBA when healthy like most of our starters). We can work with that and build. This team is in such a great place going forward.

I hope to share your optimism except that I can't help but think this equally likely scenario can occur:

- Hayward leaves
- Favors leaves
- by 2018 we will be repeating the same situation of being a .500 team with cores of "Hood, Gobert and Exum" and wonder whether they will leave when their contract is up ..

I feel like this formula isn't exactly working
