What's new

I'm just glad we didn't draft Devin Booker

As far as the OP, I understand the dooms day and depression with how the Jazz are playing and it's easy to just see Trey Burke = 2 first round picks and Gobert = 27th overall pick for a second-round pick and cash consideration. But I can almost guarantee DL looked at it as a total asset draft, let me explain. Also want to note every Jazz fan on this board and off was clamoring and demanding a PG in that draft and if you don't believe me then you have selective memory and people like you saying we needed a SG more than a back up stretch PF would be even worse then "we should've drafted Booker" are right now.

Utah Jazz had picks Nos. 14 and 21 and a 2nd round pick and had the money option (for not using it in the previous year) to buy a pick if needed and the whole league knew that DNV wanted to save money and not use that pick. So to me in my head I look at it as a 3 team trade, Jazz trade picks Nos. 14 and 21 to MIN and 27th overall pick for a second-round pick and cash consideration to DNV the right to Trey Burke and Rudy Gobert.

Basically he used his draft assets to get who he wanted and the biggest needs on the team. I don't even want to get into or start the whole draft by need or best player available discussion (I'm in the draft best available camp) and there are many many examples of both working and both not working it is really more on how the situation is managed and luck.

We didn't go for Booker because we had Hayward, Burks, and Hood (plus backups in Jingles and CJ) who all play a similar position. Our bigs are weaker than our shooters with Gobert, Favors, (plus backup in Booker and Tibor - no Withey at the time). We didn't have a flexible big in an NBA that continually is moving towards mismatches and we see Lyles as a mismatch vs. Booker as a pure shooter. We obviously valued the mismatch more. Had Alec been healthy, then CJ and Jingles wouldn't be getting the minutes that they are getting and this wouldn't be a point.

I was disappointed to see Booker available and to see us pass. But I also see the logic. Time will tell. Especially if Booker continues his status as defensive juggernaut.

What?

As I understand it, the jazz drafted Lyles because he offered multiple options for spreading the floor with a big who could do it a diverse number of things including even initiating the offense at times. So one might argue that the Jazz needed wings who could shoot the three but the Jazz front office apparently also thought it was important to have a floor spreading big who could also initiate the offense and contribute in other ways. It's way too early to say that the jazz made a mistake. We lack a counterfactual to know what would happen if Lyles was in a position similar to Booker and had been handed the keys and essentially given free reign to shoot and run the offense. As we've been seeing this year that when Gobert and Favors or on the floor together it creates spacing problems, so it will potentially be very valuable in the future to have another big that provides the space that is missing on the floor when Gobert and Favors are on there together. Also Phoenix isn't trying really to win this year so they can let Booker play more minutes and give him an expanded role, while the Jazz are trying to make the playoffs so they are naturally given a larger role to Booker over Lyles. I expect that beginning next year Lyles will be receiving more playing time and an expanded role, and then will have a much better basis for making a judgment as to whether the Jazz blew it with this draft pick.

There are players just like Booker in every draft. We got a better Booker in Hood the year before. If Lyles pans out, he is a pretty unique talent. Obviously that is an "if" but drafting at the end of the lottery like that you take that chance, especially with Hood in your back pocket. If you need a Booker, you can get one this year. One dimensional shooters are always there to be had.

I think most of us saw that coming. It wasn't like Neto had been tearing up the ACB. But we're fans and hoped for the best. In reality, I think DL gave up on the team when Exum went down. But even before that, he did nothing in free agency. I really wonder if the Jazz BoD is tightening the wallet to squeeze as much profit out of the team as possible. We know the Miller kids don't really care about basketball.
U do realize Greg Miller paid the luxury tax for a year or two, right?
Thee jazz fan was right! Lyles was most definitely the better pick for the Jazz.

Lol. Glad we are on the same page.

U are right Lyles has exceeded all expectations for most on jazzfanz, and has shown great potential once he finally started getting good minutes when both Gobert and Favors got injured. Let's also not forget that he is shooting far better then anyone thought he would. This is a guy that is going to enhance our offense, provide shooting, spacing, passing, and playmaking on the wing and in the post.

Yes Booker Grades out as a fantastic shooter.... Ummmm, what else? Yay for us, that we didn't need another wing, instead we got a guy who will do everything Booker does and provide so much more.

Amazing thread I Abach. Thanks for reminding everyone how damned insightful and right I was in the draft thread. :)

Yep, way better than I thought he would.

I always said that the key for lyles greatness would be whether he can stroke it from deep or not.
I didn't think he would ever be a good shooter.
I was wrong

That was really a decision that was put into place by Larry H before he passed away. It was Larry's decision to allegedly veto a trade of AK (twice) that would have cleared that money of the books sooner.

I didn't know u were privy to all the dealings made within the jazz organization.

Even so. This was, is Gregs team and he could've done whatever he wanted.

Over Gail's dead body. Mrs. Miller is the one in charge. It is SHE that basically pulled her boys by the ears, stopped their squabbling and installed a board. As for the AK trades that didn't happen, it was in the papers at the time. You can go back and look it up.

Bump this ****!!!!!

Lyles looked far and away the better player between him and Booker. What now I Abach I?!?!

Thanks for making me look good.

Can we guess this some more? I think he should eat a little crow I'll be his waiter.

Source?

I wonder who PKM was excited about more between Booker and Lyles since they both went to UK and he had front row seats watching them practice, etc. (or does he not do that anymore?)
I'm almost positive he was higher on Booker.
