list of greatest US musicians

Van Cliburn was probably the best American born pianist of the 20th Century. He doesn't get as much credit as he should because he spent most of the latter half of his life in seclusion.

Yo-Yo Ma wasn't born in the US but he spent almost his entire life as an American - so he deserves to be on the list.

Same could be said of Vladamir Horowitz.

Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Louie Armstrong...as previously mentioned.

My wife and I are planning a trip to go see James Taylor this summer. We saw him in Washington a few years ago and loved it. It's kind of our thing, I guess. We were by far the youngest people in the crowd.
 
Of any concert I have ever been to, James Taylor puts on the best show. One of the very few artists who is as good live as he is on an album. His latest one is fantastic.
 
Tupac. He was prolific. Who knows what he could have gone on to.

Not to everyone's taste, but people who really love music, mostly love Lou Reed. Not a great guitarist, and certainly not a good singer (altho better than he usually showed) but he cut right to the essence of music and the human condition with his writing.
