It is all about power. He will save/set up people as it benefits him. Saving the Starks now places him in firm power in the Vale and places the Starks, who everyone else in the North will follow, in his debt. Big time. He is the ultimate politician.

Aside from Maegery, Lady Tyrell and the mercenary with Jaime Lannister I don't like anyone in the south anymore.
