2016 Draft Workouts!

Does anyone have shot charts on Korky? Or know how he is in different scenarios (eg, catch n shoot, etc.)?

With all the buzz D.Murray has been getting thought DX would move him up 10 slots, nope think he even dropped (#35).

Michigan guard Caris Levert is at the Jazz workout today. Surprise addition. Injured, but doing other stuff

Great to see the Jazz meeting with Levert. If he manages to stay healthy he might be a steal in the second round.

man he would be SUCH a steal in the 2nd round. I'm petrified that he'll get picked beforehand.

I'd trade up from our 2nd round pick just to secure him, if we see that his health checks out. If Durant recovered from that injury why can't he, ya know.

THe thing with him is that it's not just one injury... he's had series of them on different parts of his body.

i get that. But I mean you gotta swing for the fences in the 2nd round for players like that. Even if the chance of him not busting is 10%.

Because besides that injury he also hast a laundry list of other injuries.

Walt Perrin after the workout:

https://1280thezone.com/index.php/s..._workouts_walt_perrin_vp_of_player_personnel4

Highlights:
About Murray:
-worked out by himself, didn't work out with others
-"looked pretty good", shot better than we thought he would, picked up things quickly
-he's a PG, might be able to play a bit off-ball but he's a PG.
-SPEED! You can see the speed when you watch him.
-can improve on shooting, have to work on decision-making, because he's "such a downhill player"
-can play with Dante. They can shut down opponents defensively together.

About Caris - wanted to get to know him as a person, they have enough tape on him.

Perrin didn't hesitate one second on Dejounte's position. PG all the way.

I'm coming around on Murray. His combination of speed, shake, length, and handle is really attractive.

I had thought that he was one of those low-productivity, high-upside freshmen. But I compared the EFF and EFF/40 stat on DX of more than 45 other guards drafted between 2011-16(incl. expected). These were basically top 20 picks and those below 20 that turned out to be quite good.

Only 8 were better than Murray as freshmen at EFF (D. Russell, J. Murray, C. Payne, M. Smart, B. McLemore, C. McCollum, B. Beal, A. Burks). V. Oladipo and M.C. Williams join the list if the stat is EFF/40.

The list of those whose freshman EFF and EFF/40 score Murray exceeded includes: D. Booker, K. Dunn, B. Hield, W. Baldwin, D. Waiters, D. Lillard, B. Knight, K. Walker, K. Thompson, I. Thomas, T. Burke, R. Hood, Z. Lavine, J. Richardson, T. Ulis, (and everyone else).

Of course freshman EFF doesn't predict future success with very much accuracy (though it helps somewhat). And Murray's freshman 3 point% was worse than most of those 45+ guards (though it was better than D. Valentine, B. Hield, J. Richardson, K. Walker -- not to mention K. Leonard).

So if the Jazz determine they can work on his shot, get him stronger, and help his decision-making (all things that seem to be among the more easily taught skills), and that his character will lead to future improvement (I've heard good things), I'm all in if they go with him.

*EFF seems like a combination productivity/efficiency stat = (PTS + REB + AST + STL + BLK − Missed FG − Missed FT − TO) / GP

Couple of footnotes to my post above:

Kyrie Irving was held out of the sample of guards due to small sample size. He'd surely take the number to 9 that exceeded D. Murray's EFF level.

C. Payne and C. McCollum's high EFF scores were perhaps partly due to weaker competition/teammates. MCW's might be partly due to the fact that he was 20 as a freshman. B. McLemore also turned 20 as a freshman.

EDIT (for Spycam) Beasley joins the list with higher EFF/40 (though not EFF), if you add him to the sample

I like Chris LeVert the person. I don't know about his skills or health, but he seemed intelligent and sincere in his interview.

Denzel Valentine after the workout:
https://espn700sports.com/interviews/denzel-valentine-utah-jazz-pre-draft-workouts-6-10-16/
Highlights:
-Plans ONLY 4 workouts. Chicago, Milwaukee and Orlando(10, 11, 12, 14?)
-Sees Utah as a great fit - great organization. Loved coach Snyder.
-what he can contribute - size and making plays, shooting
-took responsibility for Mich State's loss vs Middle Tennessee.

Gary Payton II after the workout:
https://espn700sports.com/interviews/gary-payton-ii-utah-jazz-pre-draft-workouts-6-10-16/
Highlights:
-gotta have heart and determination.
-defense first, offense will come
-they didn't ask him about his dad... haha, no, just kidding, they did.
-looking to improve shooting

Walt Perrin after the workout:
https://espn700sports.com/interviews/walt-perrin-utah-jazz-pre-draft-workouts-6-10-16/
Highlights:
About Valentine:
-he worked out by himself(individual workout)
-his agents thought Utah is a great fit for him, agent not concerned about the number, worries about fit more
-shot well, handled well(can tighten it up more)
-mainly 2, backup 1 at times.
-they don't know if he can stay with athletic 2s
-defense - work in progress
-we don't care if he's a senior or freshman - looking for BPA
-gym rat, no qualms about work ethic, will work to improve

About Payton:
-good ability to react defensively
-standstill shot good, has to work on off the dribble shot

About Alpha Kaba
-if he's stays in the draft, he's on the board for one of our picks.
-very good athleticism, ways to go offensively
-can be rim protector, rebounder, rim runner type player

Comment from me:
Interesting that a second player after Sabonis seems to be targeting Utah among a VERY SHORT list of good fits they would work out for. It seems like the organization has good reputation and agents and players like the situation for their players even if the team is stacked at their position.

Great post, thank you. It is a very, very nice change to have players want to come here to work out. Nice efforts by Lindsey and Quin to improve that.

Changing the culture and perception of Utah as a likely destination. Hell, before you know it, a free agent with options might actually pick the Jazz. Can't have that happening.
