What's new

Luol Deng ends up in Utah (Rumour)

Deng only makes sense in the Iggy role (i.e. play minutes at the 3 and 4, off the bench). And, only if his contract doesn't prevent keeping core pieces after next year (but if the Millers want to pay some tax, then I'm totally cool with it).

I can see why Deng may like this. It may stretch out his career and therefore make him some extra money. Also, the Iggy role has plenty of legit NBA cred at this point, and he seems perfectly suited for it.
Iawtp

there's a lot of caveats to clear for both Deng and the Jazz that would make this a long shot, but if we can replace Booker and Ingles/Chris Johnson/Lillsap with Luol Deng??? Sign me the **** up. Again, I'm just not sure how to make it work for everybody but now I'm getting my hopes up.

There's also the Duke connection here. I think some players at this point of their career (Deng's) start thinking about how they're going to stick in the league a little longer + after their playing careers are over. Deng may be interested in what Quin can teach him. If he's getting 25 to 28 minutes a night + is utilized in key late-game situations and in playoffs when small ball goes into affect, then I think he could be happy with that.

As much as I love Favors and Gobert, we need an alternative versus certain match-ups. If we're trying to win now, then we can't rely on Lyles to be the sole alternative. Deng definitely makes sense for us (terms of contract permitting).

I think adding a big dollar FA is an over correction of what should have been done last year.

We added Hill... Everyone is a year better... Exum and Burks should be healthy..

Add a potential bargain like Nicholson... Maybe get Mclemore if they decide to move on... Hell offer Anthony Bennett a two year minimum deal and put him with our development staff.

Someone else said it too but Andrew Nicholson could be a steal. Could play some 5 in small ball. Shot 36% on 2 attempts per game from 3 last year. 78.5% from the line. 8.8 rebounds per 36 which isn't great but decent. 7'4" wingspan and 8'11" standing reach, both greater than Draymond. I'd love Deng's experience and overall game more but Nicholson may be a really solid option as well.

The time for taking fliers on projects is over. We don't need more players. We need to consolidate more players into fewer better players. A real playoff rotation is 8 or 9 players. We need superior talent 9 deep. Anthony Bennett does not give us that. Deng is a top 10 small forward. We already have a top 10 small forward, so that is perfect. Both of our sf's can switch postion, one going either way. Jazz are moving to multi-positional basketball which is a decision that I can get behind.

Finding a flier now benefits us in a year or two when we lose one of our rotation players.

We have Hayward, Hill, Hood, Favors, Gobert as starters. Exum, Burks, Lyles that's our 8. Ingles, withey, Neto fill in as needed... Gives us 9-11. So we spend a **** ton of money. Deng and Hill will both get 12-14 per year for 3 years or more. Neither is a monstrous upgrade over Ingles or Booker honestly. Both are the 9th guy.

FA is a suckers game... Stay the hell out of it DL. Go get Tucker, pondexter, or someone undervalued.

Sign a FA like Quincy Acy, Brandon bass, or bring back Booker. Pick up an upside guy.

The only way we win FA is staying out of it.

We need to find the next Bazemore, Carroll, Tyler Johnson, Josh Richardson this year so they can contribute next year.

We have had every god damned player who has come out of college in for a workout the last two years... time for this amazing scouting effort to produce something better than Chris Johnson.

Deng and Hill are TREMENDOUS upgrades over Ingles and Booker. Both are better than league average starters for one. Ingles and Booker will NEVER be even poor rotational starters. We have our project, his name is Trey Lyles. He is still two years out from being something special. Quincy Acy, Brandon Bass, and Booker don't move the needle at all, and we need to stop wasting people's time with these type of pickups. Settling for chumps like these helps build Utah's rep as a "poor free agency destination." Nobody wan't to share a billing with those guys.

Last time I checked Miami had one of the better defenses in the NBA, so I would assume Luol Deng can still play some defense.

I disagree that they are tremendous upgrades... maybe Deng, but dude has logged over 31,000 minutes and is really only effective as a 4. He will get a 2 or 3 year deal worth 30-50 M and will have suitors with bigger roles. Are we really moving Rodney to the bench for this guy? Is he coming off the bench to get 15 minutes a night? Show me the rotation where he makes a tremendous difference.

You can project Hill as a better player if you want but he currently is not much better. Had a good end of season and playoff run. I expect him to get 3 years and 36M at a minimum... too many dumb teams with needs out there.

Booker after his crappy start returned to form and shot well after the break. He's a more versatile defender than Deng at this point.

So DL had a team last year and preached development and all that when we could have added guys at discounts. Now he overpays to sit Lyles *** down after he showed how quickly he is learning? Would be awfully dumb imo.

^some peeps have gotten their wires crossed. George Hill being confused with Solomon Hill.

Let me clarify the confusion: George Hill = awesome; Solomon Hill = not good.

(for the record, I first mentioned Solomon Hill because I thought he'd be the sort of value guy that HH is talking about. The figures associated with his name are b-a-n-a-n-a-s)
