What's new

Official UofU homer thread

Now, the BYU fans narrative is how they nearly won the game (which is so BYU btw). Now if I was a BYU fan, I wouldn't be focused on that. I would be more concerned about the fact that BYU can't seem to start or finish against Utah, and that's a problem that is not new. I'm sure the hiring of Sitake will be seen as the end of that trend, buts let's be brutally honest here: The recent history of the rivalry shows Utah being the team that comes out with a gameplan they can actually execute as well as being the team that doesn't **** the bed when things get close.

It's going to be a huge trend for Sitake to turn around because I think his current roster now has a huge Utah mental block. If Sitake loses his first 1 or 2 games to Utah, it could continue to snowball. I've had my problems with Whitt, but beating BYU seems to be his absolute specialty.

I'm going to focus on this part of your post because I'm not the guy saying BYU almost won that game. We didn't.

I personally think that game was a perfect synopsis of Bronco's career against Utah. Bronco refused to treat Utah as a special game. That was a mistake. It showed on the field. EVERY YEAR. Utah came out with a great game plan and executed it. That led to great plays. Some were lucky (not even green could argue that). But that's what happens when you're that prepared. This was part of the reason I wanted Bronco to go away so badly.
Sitake has been around Whit and seen how he prepared for these games. Hopefully, he learned a lot from it and implements that.
Getting back to beating Utah and getting into the Big 12 are the only things on my Christmas list.

Yup

I'm glad broncos philosophy of every game being the exact same is gone. Playing suu or wagner should not be treated the same as playing utah, michigan, ucla, michigan state, mississippi state ect.
I always thought that was so stupid.

BigB: decent post. The only thing I disagree with is your "getting back to beating Utah" statement. You guys haven't beaten Utah with regularity since McBride got here. He basically went .500 vs BYU and well, you guys know what has happened since Urban/Whitt came along. I think over 2 decades is long enough to establish that simply "getting back to beating" Utah isn't really going to be a thing anymore. At least, not how you guys had it in the 70's/80's.

The rest of BYU fans: "If these 15 things hadn't happened, we would have won that game". It's the same **** EVERY year. Hell, there are still BYU fans out that there that actually try to pass off the 54-10 game as "a few bad bounces". Yawn. It's old, tired, and sad. Hopefully after Sitake loses to them this year, you guys will come up with some new excuses. (Just kidding, I know you won't.)

Can you find a post of byu fan saying anything like "we would have won that game?"
Strawman.

Also, 15 things? Come on man. Be a little bit genuine/accurate at least.

At this point, I'll take one win.

Utah has won the last 5 meetings with BYU.

Since 2000 Utah has a 133-65 overall record and a 11-1 bowl record with wins over USC, So Miss, Pitt, Georgia Tech(2), Tulsa, Navy, Alabama, Cal, Colorado St, and BYU. Their lone Bowl loss was to Boise St.

Utah is a really good program. Given this reality BYU and their fans needn't mope nor should they be poor sports with a bag full of excuses, shoulda couldas, and what ifs. They should emulate Utah and admit that Utah is doing what BYU aspires to do. The school seems to have embraced this idea with the hiring of Sitake. Maybe it's time the fans do too.

Since the inception of the PAC-12, Utah is the ONLY PAC-12 TEAM to beat EVERY SINGLE PAC-12 team.

No other team has done that.

Utah is a damn good program.

Also, Kalani has stated numerous times that he hopes to build BYU up to what Utah is.

Some were lucky (not even green could argue that). But that's what happens when you're that prepared.

The Squally fumble was lucky...maybe. But, when your C is getting his butt kicked by the DT's all game, they get jumpy. You start to press. If Mangum hadn't crapped the bed so badly, and BYU is only down 7, maybe that fumble never happens. So, like Urban always says, "I don't believe in luck. I believe in being so prepared that I can take advantage of any opportunity that presents itself. That's what people call luck."

The rest, Utah was prepared. They had Mangum scouted and knew what he was doing before he did. The first quarter vs BYU was maybe the greatest quarter of defense ever.

Before LaVell, Utah beat BYU over 70% of the time. Since LaVell retired, Utah has beaten BYU over 70% of the time.

Maybe LaVell was just a once in a lifetime coach and BYU is just a nice program that caught Utah in their most down time of their history.

BYU fan always talks about how Bronco treated the Utah game like any other game. Yet, in BYU's media days, all they talk about is beating Utah, even when Bronco was there.

Something doesn't add up.

How many times did KVN talk about his "Super Bowl"?

I agree. 9 times out of 10 you make your own luck. You do that through preparation, intimidation, and being good at what you do. There is a reason BYU had so many turnovers against Utah.

That being said, If BYU wins this year it will be that 1 time out of 10 that is just pure dumb luck :p

Back to Utah fall camp. After practice Asiata talked about how good Williams has looked and how he expects him to separate himself from the pack next week.

Remember this: The media only sees the last 20 mins or so of practice. So, they see a lot of Huntley airing it out and Williams being conservative. Huntley has looked really, really good, especially for a true freshman.

Williams has been a lot better. And his biggest asset is how smart he is. Sounds like he knows where to put the ball and when to take shots and when to live to fight another day.

And Zack Moss. Wow. A true freshman? Wow. Think a better, faster, more elusive junior year Harvey Unga. Moss may overtake McCormick on the depth chart.

And our DL? You could take our second string DL and they'd start at 90% of the country. Our DL is INSANE. Look at our backups:

Pita T
Chris Hart
Leki Fotu
Tasini
Tupai

No wonder Handsome bailed when playing time wasn't promised. No wonder Tui'kolovatu left. We are freaking STACKED.

Same with our secondary. We have 9 players that are good enough to start right now. Out of 5 positions.

Expect a lot of 5 down linemen and 1 LB'er with Hansen or Thompson coming up and acting like a hybrid LB/S.

I was wrong. You will argue anything and everything. If I didn't know better, I'd think you were a damn lawyer.

OMG can we just quit with the BYU obsession around here already no offense but geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez
The obvious answer to your question is no.

I agreed with what you said. To refresh your memory, here is what you said:

Green,

On the DL depth, it's insane to me that we just had a player leave the program because playing time would come easier at USC. I know USC is thin in their front 7 but I NEVER thought I'd live to see the day that USC was poaching Utah reserves in search of starters.

If only we had the same problem at QB....
