Norm Chow was on the radio on Monday. They were talking about the rivalry and DJ told Chow that BYU hasn't won in six years and Chow was stunned. He was shocked it had been so long since BYU had won. He then went and talked about the rivalry game and he said that he whipped BYU pretty good, but, "we had a lot more talent than they did that year."
They asked him why he thought that BYU had struggled so much and his response was very interesting and went COMPLETELY against BYU fans' narrative surrounding the game.
He said something along the lines of this:
Being in the PAC-12 has changed the game for Utah. While they still want to win, their #1 goal is winning the PAC-12 south. That game does not change their goal. It doesn't help them or hurt them with their goal. One thing he noticed coaching at Utah was how Whitt downplayed the rivalry game and TREATED IT LIKE IT WAS ANY OTHER GAME.
He said that by doing so, it allowed Utah to play looser and more carefree and just do their job. He said that mistakes happen when you try to do too much and that leads to turnovers. While BYU was so tense, and so worked up for the game, Utah was able to play loose and mistake free.
Very interesting. Here is a guy who is pro BYU, who talked about BYU, and very complimentary about BYU, for 90% of his 15 mins on the radio, saying that BYU cared too much about the rivalry and that was part of their problem.
Funny, because BYU fan runs around and talks about how Bronco didn't care about the rivalry and that's why they lost.
Finally, the Utah/BYU games have a similar pattern since Utah went to the PAC-12:
Utah gets up early by multiple scores.
BYU comes back and makes it interesting but loses in the end.
Could it be that this happens because Utah is just better? Utah is the better team, they have conference play coming up, they don't want to open up the playbook too much. Talent wins out at first and Utah goes up early. BYU makes adjustments, and compensates for the lack of talent with their scheme and is able to come back. BUT, just when BYU is about to win it all, the talent gap presents itself again and Utah wins.
That is what is really happening. Not, BYU psyches themselves out. Not that Utah is lucky. Not that Bronco didn't care. Utah is just better. Better facilities, better coaches, better players.
It's pretty simple. The team that is more talented will win most of the time.
