College Football Thread

This is only the third year of the CFP and Oregon made it in year one, and won a semi final game.

I agree PAC 12 didn't look good, but I don't see a reason to start assuming we won't put a team in the playoffs. Stanford has the best chance.

My bad on Oregon. Stanford scares me. I agree they have the best chance but they always seem to have a WTF game every year.

Norm Chow was on the radio on Monday. They were talking about the rivalry and DJ told Chow that BYU hasn't won in six years and Chow was stunned. He was shocked it had been so long since BYU had won. He then went and talked about the rivalry game and he said that he whipped BYU pretty good, but, "we had a lot more talent than they did that year."

They asked him why he thought that BYU had struggled so much and his response was very interesting and went COMPLETELY against BYU fans' narrative surrounding the game.

He said something along the lines of this:

Being in the PAC-12 has changed the game for Utah. While they still want to win, their #1 goal is winning the PAC-12 south. That game does not change their goal. It doesn't help them or hurt them with their goal. One thing he noticed coaching at Utah was how Whitt downplayed the rivalry game and TREATED IT LIKE IT WAS ANY OTHER GAME.

He said that by doing so, it allowed Utah to play looser and more carefree and just do their job. He said that mistakes happen when you try to do too much and that leads to turnovers. While BYU was so tense, and so worked up for the game, Utah was able to play loose and mistake free.

Very interesting. Here is a guy who is pro BYU, who talked about BYU, and very complimentary about BYU, for 90% of his 15 mins on the radio, saying that BYU cared too much about the rivalry and that was part of their problem.

Funny, because BYU fan runs around and talks about how Bronco didn't care about the rivalry and that's why they lost.

Finally, the Utah/BYU games have a similar pattern since Utah went to the PAC-12:

Utah gets up early by multiple scores.
BYU comes back and makes it interesting but loses in the end.

Could it be that this happens because Utah is just better? Utah is the better team, they have conference play coming up, they don't want to open up the playbook too much. Talent wins out at first and Utah goes up early. BYU makes adjustments, and compensates for the lack of talent with their scheme and is able to come back. BUT, just when BYU is about to win it all, the talent gap presents itself again and Utah wins.

That is what is really happening. Not, BYU psyches themselves out. Not that Utah is lucky. Not that Bronco didn't care. Utah is just better. Better facilities, better coaches, better players.

It's pretty simple. The team that is more talented will win most of the time.

Mississippi State's QB had 195 yards rushing on 17 carries this week in a win over South Carolina. If this kid ever learns how to pass he is going to be a great QB.

Wildly impressed that Mississippi State was even in position to win the LSU game, too bad they did terrible on the punt return/ensuing 4 downs.

Why is Texas(2-1 with a loss to Cal) still ranked while Az. St.(4-0 with a win over Cal) isn't? Texas beat Notre Dame but so did Duke lol.

Because Texas is one of those schools that will always get over-ranked if they do decently because people are excited to think they are "back". Same with Notre Dame getting over-ranked when they are OK.

Yeah, super annoying that voters nerd out over traditional powers being "back".

Miami has been "back" for a week or two at a time every year for the last 10 years, all without ever actually having a decent season.

Who did az state beat and what were the scores like? I just read that az state is allowing more passing yards per game than any team in the country.

UK tied with @Alabama after Q1.

Hopefully a tornado rips through the stadium and it's called a tie. U.K. Has NEVER won at Alabama.
#neverwill

Just read that Christian mccafrey has not scored a td in a true road game in his entire career.

This time it's real, because they actually have a decent coach. Freaking Al Golden had tons of NFL talent, but he was an awful coach. The entire coaching staff was laughable...here's what happened after he got fired.

Al Golden: Miami HC to Detroit Lions TE coach
James Coley: Miami OC to Georgia WR coach
Mark D'Onofrio: Miami DC to Pop Warner Coach in Miami

I'm not kidding on that last one. Dude couldn't get a job anywhere.

Maybe they'll be good, maybe they won't, but voters had them #15 in the AP after beating...

Florida A&M
Florida Atlantic
Appalachian State

This, after not having a good season in years.

That's stupid.
