Life - official thread

Obligatory *rowing*

And now that I am caught up on the water aerobics...

- I can't believe how cold it's been. Might have to move further south.

- kids growing up too fast.. and some days not fast enough

- Kentucky beat Louisville in FOOTBALL. Whoa. Life is good.

- made a ****ing killer meal last night. A beautiful buffalo chicken sandwich with jalapeño-blue cheese-coleslaw. Too legit and ****.

- I am uncovering some UNREAL history here in St. George that is fascinating. May do a documentary one day. May embarrass some people, but it's early 1900's stuff so the perpetrators are dead. But it's incredible stuff.

- working too much. Need more playtime.

So my birthday was this past Saturday. Two of my daughters were with their mother (my ex) for Thanksgiving. Well my wife got with my ex and worked out us getting the girls. So I woke to all my kids at home and we all had a big breakfast for my birthday.

All 7 of us sat around the table talking, laughing and stuffing our faces with eggs, ham, sausage, hash-browns, biscuits with jam, orange juice and coffee. Perfect way to start my birthday.

Because bigb,

I just burned 207 calories in 13 minutes and then stretched well and set the concept2 to a 400 meter time trial. I went 97% and hit 250 meter at 45 seconds and stopped like a bitch. The whole lack of base and heart issues has me overly concerned when I probably shouldn't be and so I'm now more likely to stop instead of pushing myself to the brink of death.

Pretty much.

I am going to up it a little bit at a time. I like that I def had some (a decent fighting amount left at that pace?) left in the tank. With better conditioning, next time, I think I am going to try to max out somewhere between 52 and 59 seconds to see how many meters I can get. Then, after that, maybe go for sub 1:10 for 400 meters. This pace (sub 1:10 for 400 meters) is just the tiniest bit faster than I rowed tonight. Though I think around the 55-57 mark, I would just start killing myself.

Just warmed up and did a 350 meter time trial on a Concept2 in 1:02.1 for 34 calories burned. It's funny too. On my first attempt at it tonight, I snapped the chain on the machine and had to stop just 2-3 seconds in. Thank God they had two.

Rowing is good for me because I am so obsessed with proper pacing and I can simply look at certain numbers on the screen as I row and know if I have to slightly increase or decrease my torque. This time around, I was looking at the calories/hour number and was fluctuating between 2,040-2,175 for most of it. I think at one point I was above 2,200.

Next time, I am going to try a 450 meter time trial and attempt to strictly stay above 2,135 calories per hour. That's a slightly (2.5-3%) greater pace for an extra 100 meters, which in my mind, I just have to gut out for an extra 17 seconds or so. It should be tough as hell though as tonight I was starting to fade the last 5-10 seconds, rowing the last five seconds or so around 2,030 cal/hr pace.

My pace tonight was 1:28.1 for a 500. The WR for my age group is an insane 1:15.3.

It's exciting because I haven't lifted in the last couple weeks and have done little cardio compared to what dedicated, stud athletes do so I feel like I have a lot of upside still. My goal by the end of December is sub 1:27 for 500 meters.

Headed out with the family to get sushi then go to Abravanel Hall to see "Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses -- Master Quest"

Going to Kyoto for sushi since most of the other sushi places downtown are closed on sunday :( but looking at the menu and reviews and pics on yelp I'm pumped to try a place that is new to me. I know Kyoto has been around a long time but I've never been there, at least not in the last 20 years.

I'm not dead yet, and I made up most of that history.

Incredible stuff.

Today's workout was pretty fun. We had a partner workout. One person was on the treadmills while the other was rowing. The first block was broken down into lengths of 1000, 750, 500, and 250 meters. So each person took a torn rowing that distance while the other did the treads. Right out of the gate I was first on the rower and did that 1000 meters in 3:22. All said and done, my partner and I rowed 5575 meters in 24:00.
Then we switched it up and one person rowed while the other did set weight exercises. We fell a couple hundred meters short of matching that distance the second half of the workout. I hit the wall hard in that second half.

I gotta find a gym with one of these water rowing machines. Supposedly they're a bit faster. Like some 31 yo woman online posted that she rowed 1:31 for 500m on one and that she is just in okay shape.

That said, bigb, I stumbled across some thread some Brit started where he said he rowed 1:16 for 500M a couple years ago with insanely little rowing training and wants to break the world record. There's a video of it too where I think he hits 999 watts. Replies to his post state such anyway and also state that the guy is Britain's strongest man. He's 6'2", 321 pounds. Just a very muscular guy. Reminds me of you.

Also, and I was thinking of this the other day, I think the first 4-6 strokes are so important. One needs to be get the momentum up not just quickly but also to the peak quickly. To try to increase the pace later, at the 30-45 second mark is just too tough IMO and it's good to get it to the max quickly with the hope of simply attempting to maintain it.

The other day the trainer was saying the goal for 100 meters should be 10 strokes or less. The best I got that day was 11.

So less strokes early on?
She said it was more about really leaning forward and exploding with the back stroke (get your mind out of the gutter Dr. Jones). It's not really about stroking as fast as you can, but the leg drive and range of motion.

I believe that. When I said faster, I simply meant the pace, not how fast I was pulling, if that makes sense. And I believe what you said. When I did the 350 recently, I felt more powerful and deliberate in my strokes than anything else and not as if I was trying to get up and back in formation as quickly as possible.

Wife had her first ultrasound today. There was good news and bad news. Our baby is healthy, and doing well, but there was supposed to be twins and we lost one. It's hard to process the grief while also being happy that you have a healthy baby. I just hope I don't look at that kid for their whole life and wonder "what if..."

You won't. You'll be fine.

Sorry for your loss. And congrats on the healthy baby. How exciting!

^I will admit I am using this as image hosting.
That is one of among many interesting finds in southern Utah that are similar but no one seems to know why earlier people have created these "things."
