Just saying if a drone attack happened on your country and killed some of your family (and not terrorist family, just one of the thousands of innocent deaths from drone strikes) then I would emphasize if you felt some resentment toward the USA.

I still find that displaying national flag colors should not be offensive in anyway to any refugee. You came to USA, you are part of this country now. Embrace it and be proud seeing national flag colors. If you feel offended, well, maybe this country is not for you then, go somewhere else.

Agree. But if there is something more, like using the flag to attack others identity, then that is wrong. Simply showing ones patriotism is not wrong.

This isn't even remotely similar and you know it. America has stood against everything that Nazism stood for.

So here's the thing about that: symbols don't have an objective meaning. They attach to the ideas we associate with them. That means that what the symbol stands for can change over time. The swastika itself had no particular negative significance until it did. America is perfectly capable of tarnishing the meaning of stars and stripes through bad actions.

In my view the flag does not represent America it represents the US government. It offends me sometimes in aN emotional way, sometimes in a more rational wtf kinda way, and sometimes in a that's just nasty kinda way.

I know it's taboo and a lot of you will be offended by it but I don't even hold it in reverence due to the soldiers that have died for it. I am not filled with pride because of the people that have died for it, It disgusts me because of that. It has been a very long time since a soldier has died that you could point to and say that my freedom depended upon his death.

As far as I'm concerned we should burn the flag, give it a proper ceremonial death, cry, and then never fly it again.

I am honestly surprised someone else feels this way.

Part of the problem for me with the flag is that people take the positive meaning of it as a symbol and then seek to justify anything they want to do by using the power of the symbol through some sort of ideological transference. "We can all agree that this symbol is objectively good; I love this symbol publicly, therefore I am good too." It's irrational and makes people behave bizarrely. I cringe every time I see the stupid mandatory flag lapel pin on any politician.

This would be a better argument if the government behind the flag wasn't aggressively pushing away refugees. Open hands will inspire more confidence and desire to join than closed fists.
