I'm pretty sure if he made the all NBA team this year than the 16 million he make next year is irrelevant. He would sign an extension mid-season and I'm pretty sure the first year of his deal would be next year. In the same way we were trying to give George Hill a pay raise this year.

A 100% healthy Hill would help us, but his health is a major concern. Even when healthy, he is more of a defensive liability against Curry and Klay than Millsap would be against Green and Iggy. Millsap is a fantastic post defender because of the little things he does.

Wishful thinking if you believe we can beat the Dubs next year which means we need to be thinking 2-4 years out. At that point, Millsap will be 34-36 years old. If you think Millsap, at that age, given his crappy playoff history is gonna help us overtake the Warriors, you're bat**** crazy.

That's what I said. All NBA = opt in and extend. Not All NBA = opt out and either a 1+1 or a 5 year max with player option. Considering how close he is to All NBA, I don't see him leaving Utah. There's a real possibility that he could make it next year with a good start by the team and continued improvement. It just depends on how much risk he's willing to take.

Would have been very interested before he got hurt. Now. . . after the season the Jazz just suffered through. . . I'm a pass on any player with major injury history unless he comes dirt cheap.

He would have been impossible to afford before he got hurt. It's more interesting because he might actually be in our price range.

Why wouldn't he opt out and sign a 1+1 with second year as a player option then sign megamax. Didn't read the article but that seems like the best way to do that dance if he wants to.
 
Haven't read through this thread at all, but Butler/CP3 would be my top targets. Lowry/Millsap/George a tier down from that.
 
Hayward needs to sign a 2 year deal (w/ potential to opt out in one) and then sign his monster deal. By the time that's done around age 35, he'll still have one decent little deal left and have netted over 350M.

Even if he gets injured badly during the first short two year contract, he'll have netted about 115M, and then be able to sign a contract, albeit at less, but still 20M+ minimally I'd guess, and over his career finish north of 250M. To put that into perspective, Dirk is currently #1 in all-time active earnings at 241M.

This allows him to evaluate his options better and make money. Is this risk greater? Sure. But there's also risk in locking yourself into a franchise for five years if team's ship has sailed before that contract's up.

That didn't work out so well for the Pelicans. They probably thought the same thing. But they were better after getting him when he didn't play.
 
If I'm a free agent, and I have the opportunity to play with Hayward and Gobert, I would have to think about that seriously. Gobert especially anchors the defense, scores efficiently and doesn't take touches away from other marquee players. The Jazz could be 3rd or even 2nd in the West next year if they make a couple solid moves from here.
 
The problem with Cousins ultimately is that he can't or won't run the floor consistently. He takes possessions off.
