We should move on from George Hill

Basically, if the NBA GM's voted on cap smoothing this monstrosity would have never happened.

gotcha gotcha.

Interesting. In the instance of a sign-and-trade with NOLA do we get Jrue's bird rights, for example?

I truly know nothing about the CBA

I'm not quite sure, but I don't think so. The bird rights rule would only apply to NOLA in this situation. But I could be wrong.

And do we need to be under the cap to make that trade?

Not sure on that one. I think as long as salaries matchup it would be ok? So if New Orleans is cool with taking our scraps for Jrue Holiday and Jrue Holiday wants to come to Utah, then I guess it could work? Seems highly unlikely. I'd assume Jrue goes to Philly.

Just imagine if DL didnt play hardball and just gave Hayward the 5 year max 3 years go.

This ^

Love DL and his vision for the team, but this + drafting Burke are his two big mistakes. If the Jazz had Hayward for two more years at under $20 million, there's an awful lot they could do to improve the team before these decisions had to be made. Plus, he'd have likely gotten the designated player extension after that deal. . . so it would have been 10 years of Gordon Hayward at lower costs than they'll pay to re-up him two years early.

I'm concerned because I want to stay within the realm of possibility. If your notions have the Jazz going 15M over the LT three years in a row, well, I just don't think it is that realistic to expect. At all.

My guess with the tax is that Utah will not go more than 10 over and not more than 2 years, although I think they'd surprise us, say, if Utah were to go really deep into the playoffs. The repeat offender tax kicks in after 2 years.

Regardless, they have one more year before they are forced to do anything, so that gives them time to decide what their priorities are.

Some really good discussion going on here. I'm in the agreement that we need to re-sign Hill. I would go 4-years 100 mil and feel pretty good about it.

Interesting things from Hill today. In essence, he came back earlier than he might have otherwise because he knew the team needed him. (And he didn't say this, but also probably because he wanted to demonstrate he wasn't a big liability.) The toe was basically never right all year, and although the medical folks told him he wouldn't need surgery, he would need to rest it for an extended period in order to heal. He never really got the chance to do that. He spoke about "we" meaning the Jazz not just in terms of this season, but also talked about "we" in regards to the season before he even joined the team. It might be reading too much into it, but I like the fact that he's thinking beyond his own time with the team, thinking of himself as a part of it. I've heard rumblings that he may regret not locking in with us when he had the chance because it's possible his value decreased due to the injury over the rest of the year. I'd love to have a healthy Hill back. Guy was huge for us when he was able to play this year. Two of his three injuries (concussion and the finger) were weird flukes and not symptomatic of being injury prone, i.e. bad knees, etc. The foot is cause for concern, perhaps, but I trust the Jazz will do due diligence in making sure they are investing in a healthy player, or at least making a smart gamble.

I think the year we signed Hayward it wasnt obvious that was about to happen. I think the next year is when GM's became aware of that.

Ya, that's how I remember it too. But I heard that Hayward could have been had on a cheaper, better, contract, had DL made a respectable offer as opposed to waiting for an offer to match.

I think if Hayward leaves, we can look back to that as a possible reason. Jazz didnt fully believe in Hayward 3 years ago.

I doubt it. It worked out fine. He doesn't strike like the kind of person who would hold such a complicated grudge.

I also fully believe Hayward will stay.

When Locke talks about his personality, he makes it seem like Hayward is very much like that.

I'll chalk that up to him being a new GM and getting some poor "guidance" on how to manage big decisions (passively) by KOC.
